My Travel Diaries

Borneo adventure

Sunday 6th May 2007

Our visit to Borneo must be on my top 10 favourite places. It incorporated all that I love about travel. The locals were extremely friendly, the scenery was stunning and it involved two of my favourite sports – walking and diving.

We were in the Sabah Province of Borneo, and one of the highlights of the holiday was reaching the top of Mt Kinabalu (4,095m) at dawn. It was a hard slog to the Laban Rata Resthouse but worth it for the views! We rested here for the night before being woken at 3am for the final ascent to the summit. This was the hardest part of the climb as by this time we were affected by the altitude.

The other highlight had to be diving off the Island of Sipidan with Greenback Turtles, shoals of multi coloured tropical fish and even a White Tipped Shark or two.

We also saw the Turtle Conservation Project in action and went to the Orangutan Rehab Centre at Sepilok. Baby Orangutans are just as mischievous as their human counterparts, but also just as cute. We also had a night at Turtle Island and watched the turtles laying eggs on the beach as well as seeing the hatchlings released to the sea.

Borneo has something for everyone - great beaches, wonderful wildlife and adventurous things to do. It is also very well geared up for tourists.

A truly memorable holiday!
