My Travel Diaries
We were in St Lucia in June, and although probably not the best time of the year for the Caribbean weather, we had a fabulous time.
St Lucia must be one of my favourite Caribbean islands and very different in character to its neighbours.
St Lucia is very green and lush with fabulous scenery, although it is only 24 miles long. The roads are something else! We hired a car for a couple of days to explore the island and it was quite an adventure negotiating the steep windy roads. We stayed at two hotels on the island. The first at Jalousie Plantation on an all inclusive basis and I just loved this hotel. It is set between the Pitons and can’t be beaten for location. All the rooms are pretty colourful cottages dotted on the hill side. We stayed on an all inclusive basis and were allowed one free dive a day (qualified divers only) The hotel had a great relaxed atmosphere and the food and wine were excellent. It was quite a walk from our cottage to the reception so the hotel laid on courtesy shuttle buses that ran every few minutes.
Our second hotel was Discovery at Marigot Bay (the bay where they filmed Dr Doolittle) and again we were treated to a stunning location with lots of very expensive yachts in the marina. The hotel is very contemporary in style and has no beach but a lovely pool. There is a beach across the bay. If you do stay here, a top tip is to catch a launch across the bay to the Rain Forest Hideaway restaurant.
If you don’t fancy hiring a car there are plenty of excursions to keep you occupied, kayaking, sailing, jeep explorers, rainforest hikes, a round island tours, bird watching and a particular favourite of mine - zip wiring through the rain forest in a very becoming hairnet and helmet!
St Lucia was everything I could have wanted plus much, much more!
