Maldives Magic

Wednesday 19th March 2008

This was a surprise holiday for my husband’s 50th birthday. We needed somewhere to relax and de-stress and I must say the Maldives is the certainly the place to achieve it.
We flew with Emirates via Dubai and landed in Male around 9.30am. After a quick clearance through customs we were ushered to our speedboat which took us and four other guests on the 40 minute journey to Anantara, our resort on Dhigu Island in the South Male Atoll.

This paradise escape is made up of two small islands which you can hop between by using the little shuttle boat that runs from early morning until the wee hours.
We were escorted after check in to our water villa just a short walk from the reception area. I was pleasantly surprised at how spacious they were. Every amenity from coffee machine to DVD player, luxurious bathrooms and stylish furniture.
The lagoon was amazing to swim in, incredibly warm and full of colourful tropical fish. We even saw baby reef sharks that would appear every afternoon beneath our villa. This resort was ideal for those who worry about eating options when you are virtually a captive audience. There are five restaurants including fusion, Italian and Thai. The latter being housed in a structure at the end of a walkway so that it looks as if it is floating on water. Spectacular location and food to match!
I can highly recommend the spa - just the thing after a tiring day just swimming and eating.
The evening fishing trip is something not to miss. You are given a hand line; the boat boys bait your hook and off you go. We caught so may Red Snapper and the largest was prepared for our meal the following evening.

Although the resort was apparently full at time of going there really was hardly anyone to be seen during the day as most people seemed to spend time on their own terraces, but do pre-book for dinner in your chosen restaurant to avoid disappointment. We booked only on bed and breakfast basis and were a little concerned over how much we would spend during the week, however the US dollar favoured us and I spent far less on dinner, drink, spa etc than I imagined I would.
This island does cater for children and I would advise that you request accommodation on Dhigu as the children’s club and facilities are here.

Yes, it’s a long journey for just a week but worth the time travelling. The rest of the world doesn't exist whilst you are here and the beauty of the surroundings, the superb service and food that would not be out of place at top restaurants here. It certainly ticked all of our boxes and on leaving...... well, there is a little surprise that awaits you!!!
