My Travel Diaries
I went to Guernsey on a Travel Counsellors trip. I had always wanted to revisit the Channel islands ever since I went to Jersey my first holiday.
I flew with British Midland from Birmingham. I am a nervous flyer but they were good and I was with some people who were also on the trip and the short flight just flew by.
Guernsey airport is very small but very modern and our luggage was out in a few minutes and we were picked up by a minibus and transferred to our Hotel St Pierre Park which is a lovely 4 star hotel just outside St Peter Port. The weather was good and it was lovely being driven through the lovely lanes at a speed of around 30 miles per hour. In Guernsey everything is at a much slower pace so you really get a good feel of being relaxed. We checked into our hotel and myself and my room mate decided to explore the grounds of the hotel which were very spacious and we chatted to a few people staying at the hotel who were golfing. They said the island was excellent for this. The hotel was very modern and was near a good bus route to get you around the island if you did not want to drive.
In the evening we were taken to a lovely hotel called The Hougue du Pommier, this is a country house hotel with beautiful deluxe rooms and a good restaurant. It was not big and very nice for a honeymoon or a special event. This one I would highly recommend. The food was excellent.
The next day we departed for the ferry to take us to Herm. I had been really looking forward to and it lived up to all of my expectations. The ferry was only around 20 minutes and Herm is a place that is so peaceful and beautiful and the beaches are on par or even better than the Caribbean.
Herm has one hotel on the island called The White house and it has no TVs, or phones in the bedroom so you can really escape. The repeat business for the hotel is very high and families return year after year. It was lovely seeing the children playing games and people just relaxing without the interruption of modern life. If you want to go self catering or even camp you can also do this on Herm. There is only one pub that everyone uses but it never appears busy so again you do not feel any stress at all. It is a fantastic place for walking and the scenery is something to die for. One of my most favourite places that I have visited
We did a tour of Guernsey and the island is so small you can get around it easily, you can drive or use the buses and they have special deals for tourists. Places of interest that we saw were The little chapel covered in little pieces of colourful china and seashells, the German Military underground hospital, Victor Hugos house and for families there are lots of museums and an Aquarium and bowling and of course the VAT- free shopping. We were also shown some of the back streets and ghost stories by a wonderful lady called Annette Henry who does her own tours. A definite must do if you are lucky enough to visit Guernsey.
Our last day and we enjoyed a beautiful cliff top walk and then visited two more hotels. The Old Government house hotel and spa in the centre of St Peter port is an excellent hotel with a spa if you really wanted to spoil yourself, and one called The Peninsula, this was large and modern but good for familes as it had family rooms.
To summarise Guernsey has something for everyone, it is so easy for a short break, and I did not find it expensive at all and the restaurants were all of a hight standard. It is ideal for large groups of people, golfers, families, honeymooners or just anyone wanting a really good holiday. The flights are quick and so are the transfers so it is a place to bear in mind if you need a little pick me up, but you can spend a week or even two weeks and you would not be bored you can even do two centre holidays with Herm or Sark and also go over to France or Jersey if you wish.
