My Travel Diaries

My holiday in Borneo

Tuesday 16th October 2007

5 Stars

My most memorable holiday has to be my holiday last year. I travelled to Borneo which was a dream come true for me as it had always been my ambition to see the Orang-utans.

We flew with Singapore airlines and broke up our flight with three nights in Singapore. It is a clean city with lots of modern areas but steeped in history. We enjoyed a city tour and saw most of the main areas including China town and the statue of Raffles - famous for putting Singapore on the map. We also did a different tour to Changi Prison where the prisoners of war were kept. This was both sobering but very interesting. Of course we did lots of shopping whilst here and my husband had a suit specially made. You cannot go to Singapore and not experience the famous 'Singapore Sling' at the Raffles hotel. It was a memorable thing to do.

We then took a flight to Kuching (it means Cat City) which is in Sarawak and spent 3 nights there. This is where I saw my first Orangutan at Semonggoh. This is a centre for rescued Orangutans and is less known than Sepilok. It again was such a memorable experience and | shall never forget seeing my first orangutan swinging towards me. Kuching is a fantastic city - what Singapore was like years ago. It was very laid back with a beautiful river running through it. We stayed at The Hilton, a hotel I would highly recommend. Whilst in Kuching we also went to Bako National Park.. Sarawaks oldest park. It has some beautiful beaches surrounded by cliffs carved into beautiful shapes and patterns, but it is also home to the famous Proboscis monkey. These have fat little tummies and turned up noses. To get to the park we travelled by boat and then trekked in the park accompanied by our own private guide.

After a fantastic time in Kuching we flew into Sandakan to Seligan Island (Turtle Island) and part of the journey was by boat. This is where we were able to relax and explore the local village. The highlight however, was seeing the turtles lay their eggs. We had to wait until 23.30pm for them to do this.. we all gathered very quietly on the beach (no flash cameras allowed). This I must say was a very emotional moment to see the turtle lay her eggs and then to see where they are buried to be hatched. We stayed overnight and then we travelled to Sukau River lodge via the Gomantong caves - famous for the birds nests that are picked by the locals high in the caves for the renowned 'birds nest' soup.

Whilst at the lodge we enjoyed a tour on the Kinabatangan river, famous for its wildlife. Again we saw the proboscis monkeys, lots of birds and other species of monkeys. If you are lucky you can also spot wild elephants. We stayed overnight and visited the river again in the morning before heading for the Rain Forest. Arriving in Danum Valley (I very nearly did not go there as the journey is so long but I am so glad I did) was breath-taking and one of the most amazing places I have ever seen. It is 440 sq km of protected virgin rainforest and houses some of the rarest animals and plants in the world.

We stayed two nights here, and we had our own beautiful log cabin with views of the rain forest and the river running through it. Each morning we headed out on two fairly gruelling treks (you need good walking boots and a little bit of stamina) and saw the old the trees with Sambar deer and a few wild orangutans hidden in the foilage. The other major highlight was the canopy walkway and nature trail. I was suspended 40 metres above the forest floor - scary but a wonderful vantage point to see across the forest. I could even touch the trees with my hand outstretched.
We then journeyed onto Sepilok, another rescue centre for the Orangutans, much more commercial but still fantastic and to see the babies playing with the adults was again a sight that I will cherish.

I think after all of the early starts, me and my husband decided we needed to have a well earned rest so we flew to Brunei to finish our holiday. Only a 40 minute flight and we were there.

We checked into the Empire Hotel, a 5 star that made us feel very comfortable. We enjoyed a city tour which included some interesting sightseeing, but it was lovely just to relax, eat fine food, and pamper ourselves by the pool ready for the journey home.
