My Travel Diaries
Another visit to Tobago and even more enjoyable than the previous year. This year we visited Trinidad, only for a day but well worth the 3 hour ferry crossing each way, at a price of £5.00 each way was a bargain not to be missed. The views were amazing as we sailed along the East coast of Tobago and then along the north coast of Trinidad, into the Port Of Spain the capital of Trinidad. Trinidad has a much faster way of life than Tobago, lots of shops and street traders, where you can try some of the wonderful local food, like Roti and Doubles. Wraps with lots of different fillings like Potato Chania and Spinach, Pumpkin and Curried Chicken. The traffic was busy and the people were happy and so friendly.
So Helpful when asking directions, they will go out of their way to help you. For all the cricketers out there in January 2011 they unveiled a statue of Brian Lara and made a walkway through the city with benches to rest on and local artwork to enjoy when passing through.
Tobago for the rest of our trip was great. Beautiful beaches with lots of snorkelling to be done amongst the rocks, close to the shoreline. We visited Arygle Waterfalls and climbed to the top stopping off at three pools for a dip on the way.
Castara has a lovely beach where you can stop off at a bar and have local cuisine. For example I had Coconut and Chilli King Prawns with Rice and salad. Then you can take a dip in the Caribbean sea after your meal.
We visited Englishmans Bay and had the beach to ourselves. We went to the capital of Tobago, Scarborough and mixed in with all the friendly locals. Car hire is cheap and they drive on the same side as we do in the UK, so it is easy for anybody to hire a car and get around the Island. The Island is only 27 miles long so you can drive around it in a day. Petrol is so cheap, after filling the tank with £10 worth you have trouble using it in a weeks car hire.
At our Hotel Turtle Beach, we saw the Leatherback Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand and also saw the hatchlings come up and go into the sea, to begin there lives in the ocean. This is truely an amazing sight. The adults can be up to 10 feet long.
We spent an evening at a local village to celebrate Harvest Festival and visited peoples houses for food and drinks.
All in all a great time was had by all on a lovely quiet Island in the Caribbean sea, with fabulous weather.
