Malta Trip

I’ve just returned from an educational trip to Malta with my fellow Travel Counsellors. I have visited Malta several times but that was over 20 years ago. Malta is famous for the sport of water polo and that is what took me there all those years ago. How things have changed. The development is unbelievable.

Malta is a very small island but it has lots to offer. The history of the island is incredible. You must take in the Malta experience with a visit to The Sacra Infirmeria, the famous infirmary where hundreds were treated during the many wars. It is now a fabulous conference centre.

Our host hotel was the Fortina Spa Resort in Sliema. Famous for its wellness and superb spa facilities and frequented by the rich and famous including Angelina Jolie! The staff were superb, very friendly and even the owner joined us for a few drinks.

The Fortina Spa Resort is in a magnificent location in Sliema overlooking the harbour and Valletta. There are varied rooms including spa rooms with pools/spas. Pools are heated in winter. The spa has many unusual treatments and they specialise in many treatments including sports injury and have many VIP’s as clients. There is also a 20m pool. There are restaurants including Italian, Indian, Chinese and Thai. Staff are very friendly and it is a great location for visiting Valletta or St. Julians. The main outdoor pool area is superb.

The Phoenicia in Valletta is located at the entrance to Valletta. It is a magnificent old hotel. Standard rooms are small but modern. There are balcony rooms but the balconies are small but have great views across the city. There are eight suites that have double balconies. It’s a great location for a wedding with an impressive ball room. There is a large pool with spa and bar café and excellent views from the pool area.

The Westin Dragonara in St. Julian’s is a stunning hotel on a peninsula in front of St. Julian’s. There are varied rooms with great views across the Mediterranean and harbour. Executive rooms have access to the executive club on 8th floor. Standard rooms have two queen beds. This is a true 5 star hotel and won the top 10 hotels of Malta this year.

The Hilton in St. Julian’s is a beautiful hotel in a great location with amazing views of the sea. It is close to the Portomasso yacht harbour and the many restaurants around Spinola Bay, many of them very good with great views of the bay. There is an excellent spa offering many treatments and a lovely indoor pool area. The outdoor area is vast with amazing views across the sea and harbour from its four outdoor pools. There is a large dining area offering buffet style meals and outdoor areas offering alfresco dining.

The Corinthia Palace in St. Julian’s offers an excellent range of facilities including the Athenaeum Spa with over 50 health and beauty treatments, a fitness centre and an outdoor and indoor pool. There is a choice of many restaurants offering Oriental and Italian. Rooms are spacious and well decorated. This is a superb hotel with many facilities including indoor pool, spa and gym.

The Dolmen in Buggibba is currently undergoing a new development on the sea front which will be finished by summer 2013 and will be a great addition. The superior rooms and suites have panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and St. Paul’s Islands. All bedrooms are fully air-conditioned, centrally heated and have their own private bathroom. The majority of the hotel rooms have a balcony or terrace. There are four outdoor pools and a great spa and small gym. The hotel also has a Casino.

The InterContinental in St. Julian’s is very modern. The spa, indoor pool and gym facility are huge and offer many varied treatments and services. This is a great location for conferences due to its size and many features. The facilities are excellent. There are eight restaurants and five bars with the usual Maltese variety in cuisines. This hotel is situated in a prime spot next to all that St. Julian’s and St Georges Bay offers.

All in all there is something for everyone, whether you’re into history, food, spa treatments or just a bit of relaxation in the sun. On top of all this you can fly to Malta from 18 different UK airports and it only takes about 3 to 3.5 hours in flying time.
