South African Adventure

Going back to South Africa after 10 years was amazing, my first trip was just a four night stay in Cape Town, although a 12 - hour flight there means there is little time difference, so it's easy to settle into the normal sleep routine. Sunny Cape Town is prettier than I had remembered, with some amazing hotels. From the smaller boutique style Queen Victoria, the classic Cape Grace and luxurious Belmond Mount Nelson, to the modern One & Only Cape Town. The Victoria & Alfred waterfront was the ideal location, with an amazing atmosphere, restaurants and shopping, along with being easy to get around.

We took the short flight to Port Elizabeth and were collected by Shamwari game reserve to spend two nights at Long Lee Manor. Our ranger Dylan was amazing; we saw two female lions and their cubs, elephants, hippos, rhinos, and a journey of giraffes which was quite amazing, as well as a cheetah with her cubs. The setting is stunning, the vistas breathtaking, and the whole experience amazing.

We also visited some of the other Shamwari properties, including River Dene Family Lodge, Bayethe tented Lodge, and Sarili Lodge. There is an accommodation to suit everyone, with interconnecting rooms for families with play areas, tented camps, and stunning riverside locations. The food throughout was exceptional.

We flew back to Cape Town and our guide drove us to Boulders Beach to see the penguins on the most amazing white sandy beach, the fishing village of Simons town and Cape Point, although a full day, it was worth joining a tour for the scenery along the coastal roads.

Our next stay was in Franschhoek at Mount Rochelle, an amazing property with views to the town and mountains. The rooms are large and a mix of older style to very modern, with outdoor private plunge pools. There is also a large villa which has two private pools for the larger family. Wine tasting was the order of the day, from vineyards to local bars in town, to mixing your own blend. Again, the food was outstanding.

While in Franschhoek, we also experienced a meal with a local family, which was a lovely experience. Everyone was so welcoming, explaining about their food and traditions, which again, is an experience well worth doing.

Back in Cape Town. we headed to the Mount Nelson, which is located closer to Table Mountain. We had fantastic views from our room in the main building, beautiful pastel colours, large bathrooms, and a balcony with table and chairs. The hotel also has lovely gardens and a swimming pool. The hotel is renowned for their high tea. Our last hotel stay was at the very modern One & Only Cape Town, right on the marina and waterfront. The swimming pool and some rooms are located on an island in the marina. This is a very trendy, modern hotel in an excellent location just five minutes to the shopping centre.

South Africa is a perfect destination for foodies, relaxing, wildlife, flora & fauna and amazing experience in one country. I will definitely visit again.
