Christmas 2021 at Weybread Lakes

Claire Summers on 23 December 2021
For Christmas 2021 we travelled to the Norfolk/Suffolk border to spend Christmas in Maple Lodge at Weybread Lakes.

We had stayed on the lakes 5 years ago and loved it so we decided to go back and try a different cabin on the lake.

We like to go to East Anglia as the Christmas traffic is good rather than going South West as this can take double the usual time as we have learnt in the past.

Maple Lodge feels like a real log cabin, I love the craftsmanship, you cant help but appreciate how its built or maybe thats just me, I love it!

This cabin had an extra layer of wow factor, for its layout and furnishings.

The Victoria and Albert bath in the bedroom with the spotlights around it and the 4 poster bed is another touch of wowness!!

The lodges are immaculate with Italian leather sofas, modern kitchen with a full fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, in fact everything that you would find in your own kitchen.

It has underfloor heating throughout the cabin, the stereo system plays in every room including the bathroom. The bathroom had a walk in shower, twin sinks, bathrobes, towels and slippers supplied.

The cabins come with a full size sauna and in this lodge it is outdoors with the hot tub, which flows out from the bedroom doors.

It is a very private area, they have high panelled reed fencing and you can choose to open out the large fence panel to look out onto the lake. Even that is private as there are reeds in the lake which distort the view across to the opposing cabin.

There is WIFI throughout the cabin and this is something that has been upgraded since our last stay as there is a booster in the lodge which makes watching Amazon Prime, Netflix etc perfect. The signal is very strong. The TV has digital channels, plus a DVD player.

The location is quite remote in that there is nowhere really to walk to, only around the lake which took a few minutes, but this is why I love it here. You can hear a pin drop and you are not disturbed at all by the neighbours or the owners. Even though its a fishing lake as well we didnt see anyone, but maybe Christmas is not the best time to fish, fishing is not my area of expertise!

Within 2 minute’s drive the town of Harleston can be found. It has a lot of eating places, Indian, Chinese, Fish and Chips plus pubs and shops and a supermarket. It is a small market town where you can have a mooch around. Diss is about a 10 drive with Great Yarmouth about 40 mins away.

We normally drive to Norwich (approx 40 min drive) which is a large town for shopping, Cinema and the Panto!

We booked an afternoon Tea at Goodies Food Hall, which is 20 mins drive away and I would highly recommend it. It is a Farm Shop where you can make up your own hamper from local produce, a really nice selection of food to choose from.

At Christmas the owners put up a real Christmas tree with lights on which is a lovely touch.

We loved the lodge so much that within hours of arrival we had booked it again for Christmas 2022 and cannot wait to go back.

Update: We stayed again over Christmas in 2022 and it was just as special, so much so that we are booked for 2023 and 2024!
