Fun in the Sun Mauritius

Claire Summers on 26 September 2019
In September 2019 we stayed at the 5 star Beachcomber Trou Aux Biches Hotel on the North West Coast of Mauritius.

September weather was lovely, nice temperatures without being too hot and humid and very comfortable sun bathing weather. As the holiday went into October, some clouds started appearing but still nice and warm. Yes we had some rain and boy does it rain, but this happened during the night with just the odd light shower during a couple of the days.

Trou Aux Biches hotel was amazing, the food, the staff, the setting, the pools, you cant fault it. It is a large resort but the one thing that struck me about this hotel is you cant see the rooms. They are hidden, so you just see the good stuff, the beach, pool and restaurants.

The hotel isn’t within walking distance of shops or a town so you do need to grab a taxi to go into town, which is about a 10 min ride away but you can organise excursions from there and there is a lot to do in Mauritius.

We did a South West Island Tour where we saw the 7 coloured earth, waterfalls, gin tasting factory and a temple on a Lake. You can do boat trips, booze cruises, zip wires, there is quite a bit you can do.

We stayed 4 nights in Troux aux Biches and then moved onto another hotel called Veranda Grand Baie. This was still in the North West (they say West is Best in Mauritius for the less windy part of the island).

The hotel was in the town of Grand Baie so you had somewhere to walk too if you wished, usual Caribbean touristy town, clothes shops, market, public beach, supermarkets, couple of eating places and a couple of bars. It is not large so you can cover it in a couple of hours.

The Veranda Grand Baie was a 3 star plus property and it was lovely, the room was great, had a beach hut type feel and had everything you wanted, we stayed in a Superior room and the all inclusive included water, soft drinks and beer in the mini-fridge.

The food was OK, nothing to get too excited about, it was basic and some strange combinations of things not quite to our taste. The service was fine, If you want a more cost effective option then this is a great choice. It had 2 pools, one with jacuzzi jets, its own private little beach with free watersports and it was nice being in a small resort where the reception, gym, restaurant are just a short walk from your room. They had evening entertainment each night and a nice lounge area.

We enjoyed it at the hotel, we organised probably one of the best excursions we have ever done and that is the Mauritius Sea Karts, used to be Jet Ski engines made into these small fast boats. This was in the West of the Island (approx 1.5hour drive away). I would definitely recommend 2 hours as I think an hour wouldn’t be enough. You zip along and they want you to have fun, you can skip over the water twisting and turning and you get a chance to stop and swim in the water too, all the way you are hosted by the guide boat who take pictures of you.

I would recommend all inclusive in Mauritius, I am not a drinker but drinks can be pricey, bottle of wine can cost up to £30 and for the most part, you are based around the hotel so having your food and drink included is very convenient.

The flight is 13 hours direct from London and you can split the journey up nicely at the half way point in Dubai, it was actually nice getting off the plane to walk around and then get back on a couple of hours later. It is only 4 hours time difference (ahead of us) so no major jet lag.

I really liked Mauritius, nice and relaxed, amazing scenery, very mountainous, beautiful sandy beaches with shallow waters.

It is one of those Caribbean islands that you can visit during our summer months, so July and August and still have lovely weather.

I visited a few hotels in Mauritius whilst I was there so happy to answer any questions.
