Well what can I say? 48 hours in Madrid. It was unbelievable. I will definitely return as you need at least four full days to fully appreciate how much this city has to offer. If you love tapas, Spanish culture and art you will love Madrid. We arrived at our hotel, located in the heart of the Las Letras district, around 9.30pm. The Vincci Soho stands out as one of the most exceptional hotels in the historical centre of Madrid. Originating in a complex of five historical, protected buildings between the streets Prado, Cervantes and León that have been exquisitely renovated, this is a modern hotel in the heart of Madrid, full of art and designed to convince even the most exacting guests with experiences filled with uniqueness and character. After checking in we headed for Light Dinner at Casa Alberto. How ten courses of tapas are classed as a light lunch I do not know? This place was amazing. It was a little old door in a wall that I would have happily walked past and probably refused to go in but on entering I was blown away by the large amount of tourist and locals enjoying tapas and wine over conversation. The restaurant itself went way back and you would not have imagined this from outside. There was such a buzz to the place. Some of our group then headed to out on the town to explore the nightlife, I however headed to the gin bar that I had spotted earlier in our hotel. The following morning, we were met and for a guided panoramic bus tour of Madrid. This is one of the easiest ways of getting about to see Madrid. With Madrid City Tour, you can get to Madrid attractions quickly and easily. We tried to see as many of Madrid’s top ten attractions as we could. We started with Plaza Mayor. This arcaded square located in the historical centre of the city is the heart of Hapsburg Madrid. The cobble streets that ran off from this were packed with shops, bars and food markets. Throughout the day we visited the Botanical Gardens and the Temple of Debod, a second-century Egyptian temple donated to Spain during the construction of the great Aswan Dam. A real hid gem! The Royal Palace is the largest royal palace in Europe. We took a stroll through El Retiro Park which led us to the Prado art museum for a guide tour. Madrid hosts three of the world’s leading art museums. After all this sightseeing, we stopped for a tapas lunch at Estado Puro by Paco Roncero (a two Michelin star chef). Again another 8/10 courses of fantastic food. Before leaving for the airport we took to the Gran Vía, a lively traditional avenue on which shops, cafés, movie theatres and theatres are to be found. For me personally I fell in love with Madrid because I love to people watch and I love to dine, so tapas outside on the cobbles with friends just appeals to me. That’s my holiday. Madrid has it all, from gourmet food markets to Michelin star restaurants. Barrio de las Letras is great for tapas as well as the tapas district at La Latine. Also try San Miquel market which is lined with delicatessen stalls and bars as well as international foods at Plaza Espana.
