10 reasons to rediscover Paphos this year

The large and bustling resort of Paphos on Cyprus’ south-west coast is now officially back on the map after being the European Capital of Culture in 2017 – for which its characterful Old Town underwent a huge renovation. UNESCO World Heritage-listed, this is the mythical birthplace of the Greek goddess Aphrodite and has a whole host of historical and cultural wonders to explore as well as sparkling blue seas and gorgeous countryside to discover.

• See the sights on an exhilarating Jeep adventure, taking in the Troodos Mountains and quaint traditional villages.
• Uncover some of Cyprus' best-preserved mosaics at the Dionysos Roman House at Kato Paphos Archaeological site. You'll also be able to see the majestic Tomb of the Kings and learn about the high-ranking officials and aristocracy buried here.

• Make sure you catch a show at the Odeon – Paphos’ ancient open-air theatre, situated in the Archaeological Park and used for performances for thousands of years. This summer welcomes a number of plays, including William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in August.
• Take a dip in the Blue Lagoon. Situated west of Akamas and boasting invitingly warm and clear waters, this natural swimming pool is perfect for cooling off in, or you can explore the nearby reefs and rock-pools with a snorkel.

• Treat the kids to a day at Paphos Aphrodite Waterpark for thrills, spills and splashes. As Cyprus’ largest waterpark it has a whole host of activities and attractions to keep them busy all day, from kamikaze slides to wave pools, and a shipwreck to seek out and explore in the designated kids' area.
• Sample Greek wine straight from the vine on a visit to Vouni Panayia Winery. Sip on a variety of reds and whites whilst each one is explained to you by an expert and enjoy a sun-soaked tour of the vineyards.

• Visit the old harbour and port to watch the sun set then feast on delicious Greek cuisine such as succulent lamb kleftiko, Greek mezze and sweet baklava oozing with honey at one of the traditional restaurants.
• Visit the fascinating Ethnographic Museum in the Old Town – run by the widow of the archaeologist George S Eliades, this quirky museum is also her home. You’ll discover hundreds of regional artefacts and treasures within the extensive collection.
• Head to Lara Bay between May and August and you'll be able to see baby turtles hatching in the conservation area. You see the conservationists at work at this protected beach and learn about the turtles in the research centre.
• Take a shopping trip along Archiepiskopou Makariou III Avenue and seek out traditional local crafts including homewares in the stores. Try Aphrodite Jewellery for their pretty pendants and quirky ring selection.
