With both fine golden beaches and spectacular stretches of black volcanic sand, along with a mild year-round climate, the second most populous island of the Canary Islands is a great place for a family holiday. Whatever the age of your kids, you’ll find activities and amenities to keep everyone entertained and happy. The following are our top things to do in Gran Canaria with kids.
The Dolphin- and Whale-watching
Of the 87 species of dolphins and whales in existence around the world, an incredible 29 can be found in the waters around Gran Canaria, making an Atlantic boat trip a must. Some trips include the chance to stop off for snorkelling.
The Aquarium
New in December 2017, the Poema del Mar (Poem to the Sea) in the port of the island capital of Las Palmas is a world-class, state-of-the-art attraction founded by the family behind Tenerife’s award-winning Loro Parque and Siam Park. Don’t miss the rescue turtles.
The Underwater Walk
Go for a stroll on the seabed at a depth of up to five metres courtesy of SeaTrek Helmet Diving in Anfi del Mar, marvelling at the colourful marine life flitting around you. The experience is generally suitable for ages eight years and up.

The Beaches
Protected by reefs, sheltered from the wind and with shallow waters, Gran Canaria’s beaches could have been tailor-made for families. Among the best family beaches in Gran Canaria are Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Puerto Rico, Amadores, Mogán and Las Canteras.

The Water Sports
Many of Gran Canaria’s beaches host water sports, ranging from jet-skiing to kayaking and from banana boat rides to parasailing. AquaSport has well-reputed centres in Taurito, Mogán and Playa del Inglés.
The Boat Trips
As well as dolphin- and whale-spotting excursions, you can take to the water on a catamaran cruise, a Turkish gulet or a motorboat. Another option is the Líneas Blue Bird water taxi, a great-value glass-bottom ferry travelling between the resorts of Puerto Mogán, Puerto Rico, Anfi and Arguineguín.
The Water Park
One of Europe’s largest water parks, Aqualand Maspalomas has everything from a mini-park for very young children to several thrill slides including Snake Falls, Anaconda and Mamut.
The American Wild West Town
Originally built as a film set in the 1970s, Sioux City is a unique attraction hosting cowboy shows, Western dancing and barbecues. A full day out, it’s very popular and excellent value.
The Computer Game Themed Park
Another unique day out, the Angry Birds Activity Park – inspired by the famous video game – includes skating, climbing, zip-lining, a small racing circuit and a laser maze.

The Accommodation
From luxury resort hotels to apartments, bungalows and villas, some all-inclusive and some with kids’ clubs, Gran Canara has something to suit families of all sizes and on every budget.
