The United States of America is a huge country, with almost every landscape imaginable nestled there. On a journey through the States, you can easily discover snowy mountains, deserts and forests in a single trip.
And then there are the beaches. With everything from the palm-fringed beaches in Florida to the incredible black sands in Hawaii, America is home to a dazzling array of beaches.
Read on to discover five stunning beaches in the USA to add to your itinerary the next time you travel to this fascinating country…
Massachusetts: Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket
Picture colourful cottages, long stretches of sand, and majestic white lighthouses. Add in clam chowder, lobster and the mouthwatering seafood dishes these areas are famous for, and you have a feel for this beautiful area on the east coast!
Travel Counsellor Suzanne visited Boston and Cape Cod, hiring a car to fully explore the Cape Cod area: "We decided to split our stay so we could concentrate on different areas of Cape Cod. We spent our first few nights in Sandwich in a charming Victorian B&B. Sandwich was also a great base and we booked as foot passengers onto the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. We jumped on the bus and stopped at pretty little towns like Oak Bluffs and Edgartown with views across to Chappaquiddick Island and the multimillion dollar 'summer houses'."
Florida: St. Petersburg and Clearwater
Nestled against the Gulf of Mexico, St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach in Florida offer long stretches of dazzling white sands and turquoise waters. Alongside the stunning beaches, there’s plenty to occupy everyone in the family, from the Dalí Museum to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to baseball, with St. Petersburg home to the Tampa Bay Rays.
California: Santa Monica Beach
Just moments from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica Beach is a spectacle of cyclists and joggers, the iconic pier and Ferris wheel, and miles of soft sand. Walk the three-mile route from Santa Monica Beach to arty Venice Beach to people watch and enjoy the sights.
Travel Counsellor Donna went on an LA road trip in 2016 and loved Santa Monica: "We set off through the streets of Santa Monica to the pier where my dream came true! I rode the world famous Ferris Wheel on Santa Monica Pier! I have seen that wheel on so many TV shows and films so to be there was a real memory to treasure."
Hawaii: Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve
Hawaii has many spectacular beaches, from the renowned Waikiki Beach to its striking black sand beaches, but the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a protected area with an incredible marine life. The park protects the ecosystem here so as well as snorkelling, you’ll learn about the conservation efforts.
New England: Newport, Rhode Island
Rhode Island has over 400 miles of coastline and this charming, small, east coast state lies only 60 miles from Boston and 180 miles from New York.
Newport lies on the Atlantic Ocean and is a delightful city with exquisite 20th Century mansions, a reminder of this area’s popularity with America’s elite. Alongside miles of sandy beaches, expect historical attractions, arts and music festivals, and sailing.
