Are you looking to experience a breathtaking and unforgettable sunrise or sunset? There's nothing quite like watching the beautiful colours appear or fade away beyond the distant horizon. Grab your camera and capture this incredible moment at one of these seven top places around the world to see a stunning sunrise or sunset.
Lake Maggiore, Italy
Lake Maggiore is located on the south side of the Alps, and is shared by Italy’s Piedmont and Lombardy regions, and Switzerland’s Ticino canton. In May and June the lake is ablaze with the colours of wild flowers, but that fades in comparison to the stunning sunsets. Travel Counsellor Sarah visited Lake Maggiore with her family, and was astounded by the views, “I could have sat on my balcony forever and never tire of the views over the Lake. I loved how the lake changed colour as the night drew in. We saw some fabulous sunsets and had two unbelievable storms where the lightning was fascinating to watch.”
The Portrara – Naxos, Greece
The Portrara is one of Naxos’ most famous landmarks, a striking 2,500 year old marble doorway of an unfinished temple. Standing on Palatia, a small island accessible from Naxos, it is a perfect spot to sit and watch the sunset. As the sun sets across the water, the warm orange glow illuminates the waves and nearby Paros Island as the sky changes from bright blue to deep purple.
Sugarloaf Mountain – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rising 396 metres in the air, Sugarloaf Mountain presents a stunning view of Rio de Janeiro from the mouth of Guanabara Bay. The panoramic view of the surrounding beaches, mountains and forests is breathtaking when the sun begins to set, and is easily accessible by cable car.
Travel Counsellor Pauline holidayed in Rio de Janeiro and had this advice, “From the top, you have views to Copacabana and Ipanema beaches… save the trip for a clear day to get the full benefit of this attraction. I wouldn't worry if you don’t have a head for heights, the cable car is large enough to avoid standing around the edge and seeing the sheer drop beneath your feet!”
Flic en Flac, Mauritius
Growing from a small fishing village to an ideal holiday destination, Flic en Flac is one of the best places in Mauritius to view stunning sunsets from the beach. As the sun sets over the turquoise lagoon, there are plenty of shady spots to watch and enjoy a picnic on the sandy shores.
Travel Counsellor Lynde stayed at La Pirogue Mauritius on Flic en Flac beach, and was enamoured with the view, “This was my second visit to the wonderful resort, and yet again, I was in Love! This hotel is situated on the West Coast of Mauritius on the wonderful Flic en Flac stretch of beach. This truly is one of the best stretches of beaches out there! Wide, long, clean, white beaches with crystal blue waters, and the most glorious sunset, makes this resort one of my favourites.”
A unique location that is spectacular at both sunrise and sunset, Bagan is home to over 2000 temples and pagodas. Many choose to watch the sunrise from the peaks of the temples, but for a truly unique view opt for a hot air balloon ride instead. Travel Counsellor Adelina was astounded by the view, “Nothing compares in terms of beauty than seeing the temples and the villages come alive from the skies.”
One of the most impressive landmarks in the heart of Australia’s outback, Uluru truly comes alive when illuminated by the rising sun. As the sun rises above the eastern horizon, the colours in the sky slowly change and reflect on Uluru making for an unforgettable experience.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, is one of the world’s most incredible sights – especially at sunrise. As the sky changes colour, the temples are silhouetted against the morning sky, and reflected in the serene water.
