We've recently seen a whole host of new direct routes from the UK to North and South America, including Santiago, pictured above. And, that means you can fly straight to your chosen destination.

As well as direct flight routes to South America and North America, read on to discover some of the new and exciting long-haul travel journeys we can’t wait to try out this year…

South America

Plaza de Armas in Lima, Peru

From the parks, shops and breathtaking coastline of exclusive Miraflores to the colonial buildings built by the Spaniards centuries ago, Lima is a dazzling city. It’s busy and bustling but that adds to its charm. Wander around Plaza Mayor and Plaza San Martin in Lima’s old town, sip a pisco sour (a cocktail made with lemon, egg white, Pisco and syrup) overlooking the coast, and visit the fascinating museums here.

From Lima, there are so many spots to explore in Peru. The iconic Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail. The hikes through Colca Canyon. The deep waters of Lake Titicaca from a boat. The picturesque city of Cusco, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Travel Counsellor Simon recommends spending time in Lima, though, even if you're thinking about exploring Peru: "I arrived, as most people do, in Lima and my hotel was close to the Plaza De Armas, which houses the Cathedral, Municipal Palace and Presidential Palace, where the changing of the guard can be seen at noon daily. Some people skip on to their next destination but I think Lima is worth a couple of days exploring on its own, especially if museums are your thing as it has some of the best in South America, including the Gold Museum and Museum of the Inquisition. The Catacombs below the San Francisco Church are worth a visit too. If you get a chance, head to Miraflores for restaurants and nightlife."

Fly direct from London Gatwick to Lima, Peru with British Airways.

Belmond Andean Explorer

Colca Canyon in Peru

Explore Lake Titicaca, Cusco, La Raya Mountain Range, Raqch’i, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Puno and Sumbay Caves from the delightful Belmond Andean Explorer.

South America’s first luxury sleeper train is a breathtaking blend of old-world glamour, Peruvian textiles, and modern comfort.

With space for up to 48 passengers, this opulent train offers one- and two-night itineraries through the spectacular landscape of Peru. Onboard, expect sophisticated cuisine with Andean flourishes (and afternoon tea), a stunning observation car, and sumptuous, contemporary cabins.

Santiago skyline in Chile

Santiago is a cosmopolitan city with mountains in the background, world-class wineries within miles, and everything you’d expect in a spectacular city. From museums to parks to stunning 19th Century architecture to marvel at, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy in this stylish city. And, from Santiago, you can explore the rest of Chile, including the glaciers of Torres del Paine.

North America

New Orleans

New Orleans USA

Jazz, the historic French Quarter, and mouthwatering Creole cuisine are just a few of the things that continue to delight visitors to New Orleans. Add in the heady nightlife, the parks, the museums, and meaning boat rides on the enormous Mississippi, and it’s a destination that will delight both families and music fans alike.

Travel Counsellor Ian has always wanted to visit New Orleans, having studied American history as part of his degree in history, and spent six nights there in May 2016: "The city has so much about it that cannot really be accurately conveyed in mere words. It has a certain magic that cannot be quantified, and I would implore you to visit to understand why for yourself. From the moment we arrived there was an atmosphere of electricity running through the air. There was a spine-tingling feeling as we passed by the historic cemeteries with their traditional overground burials, surrounded by French and Creole houses, with their ornate balconies and wooden porches straight out of a Hollywood set from so many films I have seen."

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fort Lauderdale in Florida, USA

Fort Lauderdale might be nestled in the Sunshine State but this picturesque city is known as the ‘Venice of America’. Behind those 23 miles of dazzling golden sands, you’ll find a city of islands, with a network of canals, bays and rivers.

The city is known for its love of all things water – one of the only living coral reefs in the USA is here – but there are lots of cultural activities, too. Museums, galleries, and cultural institutions lie side by side with restaurants and chic boutiques, while November sees the 32nd annual film festival.

Portland, Oregon

Mount Hood from Portland, Oregon, USA

Love the great outdoors? Try Portland, Oregon for your next long-haul trip. Though Portland is Oregon’s largest city, it’s a delightful, laidback, arty city with village-style charm and lots of independent shops and cafes. And, as Travel Counsellor Veronica points out, a huge bookshop, "Portland is the home of Powell’s, one of the world's great bookstores!"

You’ll find stunning gardens (there’s even a Rose festival in June), micro-breweries, vineyards, galleries, and a city that loves the great outdoors. Canon Beach is nearby for sunseekers and Mount Hood, a popular skiing destination is less than an hour away. During your trip, don’t miss a chance to try a Pinot Noir from an Oregon winery!

Why not combine Portland with a trip to Seattle? Or a road trip to San Francisco? You could also head over the border into Canada and explore Vancouver. Veronica drove the West Coast of the USA/Canada, from San Francisco to Vancouver via Portland, on her trip: "We started our 1,200-mile driving trip north to Vancouver British Colombia (Canada) in beautiful sunny weather. The planned route is a scenic one, along US Highway 101 and/or Highway 1 through northern California and Oregon, and finally onto Interstate 5 through the state of Washington. Given the distance to be travelled in seven days, it was necessary to average 170 miles per day. We were prepared for any weather but, as luck would have it, every day was sunny and remarkably warm!"

This captivating city was founded by the New England pilgrims, making it one of the oldest cities in the USA. And, it was integral to events of the American Revolution, so there’s a fascinating amount of history to discover here.

It’s not just about history in picturesque Boston, though. Foodies will be enamoured with the great restaurants, there are lots of boutiques to explore, a fantastic aquarium, and Boston Public Garden, the first botanical garden in the USA.
