9 exciting new routes you can fly with British Airways in 2019

29 January 2019

A new year often sparks revived spirits and a desire to venture into the strange and unknown. That’s precisely what British Airways is doing after the much-loved airline announced it would begin flying to no fewer than 10 new destinations in 2019.

London Heathrow - Terminal 5

Bastia, Corsica

Bastia - a busy yet subtle port town – is rich with Mediterranean atmosphere from the sprawling tree-lined Place Saint-Nicolas – the town’s social hub – to the Boulevard Paoli and Rue César Campinchi shopping streets running parallel to the square.

Geographically, the French island of Corsica sits significantly closer to mainland Italy than France, but any questions concerning the island’s true nationality are swiftly dispersed by the fact that it is the birthplace of Napoleon.

Available: 25 May – 28 September | Frequency: Weekly | Duration: 2 hours 30 mins

“Corsica is a great place to visit in all seasons as the island is so diverse. It’s similar to Provence but with an encircling coastline. An island saturated in ancient history with Michelin star restaurants, beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and watersports - what more can you want in a European holiday?”

Charleston, South Carolina

As South Carolina’s oldest and biggest city, Charleston packs in tons of diverse historical charm, from the colourful Rainbow Row via the French Quarter’s cobblestoned streets to the Fort Sumter National Monument, which outlines the initial clash between the Union and Confederate armies in the Civil War.

You can even take a step back in time by taking a tour around the town by hopping aboard a horse-drawn carriage.

Available: From 4 April | Flight days: Thursday, Sunday | Duration: 8 hours

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Another new capital city to land on BA’s flight plan in 2019 is Slovenia’s Ljubljana. Named as European Commission's Green Capital of Europe in 2016, this leafy city oozes charm with its Old Town’s unique blend of Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings. For the past 900 years, the mighty, medieval Ljubljana Castle has stood on Castle Hill overlooking the tangy orange roofs of the downtown.

Hop on a bicycle and pedal along the leafy banks of Ljubljanica River, which trails through the heart of the city, before cutting off to venture through the gardens of Tivoli Park.

Available: 12 July – 2 September | Flight days: Monday, Friday | Duration: 2 hours 20 mins

“Taking a stroll around this gorgeously quaint city, you would be forgiven for not believing that Ljubljana was Slovenia’s largest city. Filled with sprawling green spaces and cobbled narrow streets, back alley bars and underground cafes, lovely Ljubljana still feels like a step back in time despite its capital city status.”

Montpellier, France

Located 10km inland from the southern French coast, Montpellier was hailed as France's most seductive and underrated city by the Telegraph in 2017.

It won praise like this thanks to the oval-shaped Place de la Comédie central square - one of Europe’s largest pedestrian areas. It further promises to wow you with its medieval streets, Rue de la Loge shopping strip, and stunning buildings designed by the greatest international architects.

Available: 11 July – 2 September | Frequency: Four times a week| Duration: Just under 2 hours

Osaka, Japan

Osaka will be more accessible than ever when British Airways begins operating flights to Kansai International Airport four times a week from 31 March.

Japan’s second city is much easier to get around than Tokyo, due to being notably more compact and having efficient metro system. You’re near guaranteed a great evening out in Osaka too with fantastic restaurants and bars never hard to find.

Some of its stand-out attractions include the futuristic Floating Garden Observatory, the five-storey Osaka Castle, Universal Studios Japan and Kaiyukan - the world’s largest public aquarium.

Available: From 31 March | Flight days: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday | Duration: 11 hours 30 mins

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Available: From April | Flight days: Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday | Duration: 8 hours 15 mins

Preveza (Lefkada), Greece

This small town on the coast of northwest Greece is a great stopover spot on the way to the gorgeous island of Lefkada or the vast ruins of Nikopoli and the Nekromanteio of Afyra.

That doesn’t mean Preveza itself isn’t worth exploring though, with its large harbour, long beach, and a small old quarter being a good use of your time.

Available: 26 May – 29 September | Flight days: Wednesday, Sunday | Duration: 3 hours 15 mins

London City

Split, Croatia

Split, Croatia’s second city, is blessed with more than its fair share of historical gems like Diocletian's Palace - one of the best-preserved monuments of the Roman architecture in the world.

This UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site also boasts the Grgur Ninski Statue and the Cathedral and Bell Tower of Saint Domnius. There’s plenty of opportunity to catch some sun here too, with Split serving up several gorgeous beaches.

British Airways will be flying to Split out of London City from June to September, and from Heathrow between April and October.

Available: April – October (Heathrow) | June – September (London City) | Frequency: Three/seven times a week| Duration: 2 hours 30 mins

“Having never travelled to Croatia before, we decided on Split over the more popular Dubrovnik and what a surprise it was. The food is amazing, the town and the surrounding areas beautiful and the weather fabulous, even during the Easter holidays.”

Kos, Greece

Anyone keen to while away their time soaking up the sun on golden sands should definitely head to Kos.

This Greek Dodecanese island boasts an abundance of fine beaches, with Paradise Beach, Marmari Beach and Mastichari Beach just a handful of the idyllic stretches of sand on offer here.

There’s no shortage of wholesome tavernas and Greek ruins to explore either. With Rhodes and Bodrum nearby, it can be a decent starting point for a spot of island-hopping too.

Available: 15 May – 26 October | Flight days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday | Duration: 4 hours
