Protected by reefs, sheltered from the wind and with shallow waters, Gran Canaria’s white and golden fine-sand beaches could have been tailor-made for families. And there’s something here for every mood, from quiet and remote to lively and fun-packed. Many offer water sports, ranging from jet-skiing to kayaking and from banana boat rides to parasailing.
We’ve picked out some of our favourites, with something to suit all families, from parents travelling with babies or toddlers and in search of a tranquil stretch of beach to those holidaying with teens and looking for something with a bit more oomph.
In the southernmost point of the island, this famous 6 km beach is bordered by the wildlife-rich Maspalomas Dunes nature reserve – declared a protected zone by UNESCO – completed with La Charca natural lagoon and thousand-year-old palm grove of Maspalomas. Recognisable for its Instagram-worthy wind-sculpted dunes, the beach itself is informally divided into areas frequented by different groups, including vast family area at the beginning of the beach near the still functioning Maspalomas Lighthouse, one of Gran Canaria’s most iconic landmarks. Both, Maspalomas and chic Meloneras resorts are located by this beach.
Close to Maspalomas, on the other side of Maspalomas dunes, there is a Playa del Inglés, completely revamped in the last few years, this resort is also perfect for families and a large contingent of other fans including windsurfers, runners and capoeira practitioners. A large resort, this is a fantastic spot with teens, with plenty of amenities and a great live-music scene.
Located on the south-west of the island, this pretty, fan-shaped white sand beach with plenty of shops and restaurants, has a calm atmosphere that makes it a favourite with parents of small children. Two breakwater piers shelter it from the Atlantic waves, making the shallow water safe for kids. The beach has an inflatable fun park with slides and a minigolf that's ideal for later in the day. The ocean front promenade joins Amadores with Puerto Rico beach, with all of its amenities, including water sports, if you feel like a change of tempo.
Within walking distance from Amadores, this spot with its soft sand is a lively place for seaside fun including kayaking, water-skiing, paragliding and motorboat rides. Puerto Rico Marina is a base for most of the boat trips and adventures on the island. Don’t miss “Spirit of the Sea” boat trip for dolphin and whale watching and for some family fun, head to the Angry Birds Activity Park with its splash zone.
A gorgeous white sandy bay with lots of greenery and an array of cafés, this is another smaller-scale spot for those who appreciate a calmer mood. But there’s plenty to do, too: jet-skis and pedal boats are available to hire, you can even do a Seatrek or there are ferries plying the area (including glass-bottom water taxis taking you from Arguineguin, Anfi and Puerto Rico to Mogan and back) or small boats for hire at the marina next to the beach.
Taurito is known for its large lido, Lago Taurito Oasis and the thrilling waterpark. Located between Puerto Rico and Puerto Mogán, this is a self-contained resort that's well-suited to families with younger children. Taurito has a beautiful dark golden sand beach with easy access to the waters, from which you can rent jet skis, pedal boats or just relax on the sunbeds. If you're feeling adventurous, pay a visit to the scuba dive centre.
Pretty Puerto Mogán, with its tropical plants, known as “Little Venice” has a sheltered golden sand beach with calm waters perfect for families with small kids. This resort offers plenty of accommodation for families, from apartments directly overlooking the marina to elegant luxury hotels that rank amongst the finest on the island.
The Yellow Submarine Attraction on the “Golden Shark” sub provides great views of the native sealife and shipwrecks. The glass bottom Blue Bird water taxi to Puerto Rico, Anfi and Arguineguín also starts from here.
