Adventure across the vast islands of Indonesia

14 June 2019

Indonesia’s position along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ make its incredibly diverse landscape a hub of activity for adventurous travellers, looking for something beyond the beach. To add to this, its close proximity to thousands of islands makes it easy to visit multiple destinations, each offering something different, in one trip.

Explore by Land

If you want to explore the rich and diverse landscapes of Indonesia, consider making the journey on two wheels. Cycling, if planned in advance with forethought of weather and routes, can be the best way to uncover the roads less travelled. In Bali, head north of Ubud where the countryside and traffic transforms to verdant valleys and rice paddy fields. If you prefer both feet on solid ground - the majestic peaks of Indonesia offer world-class trekking and hiking, ranging from 5-day treks up the sacred volcano of Gunung Rinjani, Lombok, to jungle expeditions in Kerinci Seblat National Park, home to Sumatran tigers. For wildlife lovers, Kalimantan, Indonesia’s Borneo, is home to 89% of the world’s wild orang-utans, making it South East Asia’s top destination for nature-lovers. Famously biodiverse, expect to see thousands of rare species deep within the rainforests which can be trekked on foot, and along the bends of the waterways by boat or in one of the riverbank lodges.

Take to the Waves

Avid surfers will likely have Indonesia down as one of their bucket-list destinations. Perfect your skills on the uncrowded waves and 10-second barrels in Sumbawa’s dramatic bays, or head to the Bukit Peninsula, Bali’s most famous surf spot with Ulu Watu at its forefront. For those that like to explore under the sea, Komodo is well known for its kaleidoscopic coral reefs and drift dives. And if you’re an amateur diver, the Gili Islands make a great introduction, with warm temperatures and good visibility, they're a popular spot to get certified.
