One of the very best things about travelling with your family is discovering a whole new world for each of you. And, what better type of holiday than one full of new wildlife and natural beauty? You can explore both fascinating destinations and the incredible animals who live there!
The sheer variety of animals, experiences and habitats across the globe available to explore is truly stunning and you can tailor your trip to suit you and your family’s wants and needs with your Travel Counsellor.
Here, we’ve chosen three destinations that offer wonderful wildlife, natural beauty, and opportunities to make memories that will last a lifetime.
Dazzling Singapore blurs the lines between zoo and botanic oasis, and it feels unlike anywhere else in the world! Beyond the skyline and the bustling city centre in Singapore, there is so much natural beauty to explore and animals to discover.
Visit Gardens By The Bay, which offers mesmerising waterfront views across three gardens, spanning over 245 acres (101 hectares)
At Singapore Zoo, you and your family can get up close and personal with orangutans, witnessing first-hand their playful and joyful nature as you eat breakfast! You can come within inches of free-roaming ring-tailed lemurs, lories and tree-hugging sloths at the giant Fragile Forest biodome, or gaze at the amazing baboons swinging in the trees. Travel Counsellor Kate visited Singapore Zoo in October 2016 and said it’s the best she has ever visited, “The grounds were amazing and the many different animals made for an interesting day.”
When night falls, rather than going to bed make sure you visit the world’s first night zoo and take part in the Night Safari, which provides a nocturnal experience like no other! Your tram travels through a variety of landscapes and features over 2,500 nocturnal animals of over 130 species, including many indigenous to the region, such as the endangered Asian elephant, Malayan tapir and Malayan tiger. You’re sure to see animals here which you have never seen before!
Amazing wildlife, vibrant cities and world-class wines, South Africa has it all in abundance.
With the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), herds of plains game, brightly coloured birds and bountiful marine life, there is so much for you to see here!
South Africa is a large, diverse and incredibly beautiful country and it’s one of the best safari destinations you will find. Experiences and landscapes vary, from the raw tropical coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal to the incredible Kruger National Park, home to the Big Five in the north east, to the waddling penguins on pretty Boulders Beach in Cape Town, so the choice is yours!
Why not combine a safari excursion with a trip to a city to make the most of your holiday to South Africa? Travel Counsellor Beverley recommends Cape Town for families, saying “Cape Town is a very ‘outdoorsy’ city and there are so many places to explore which are fantastic for kids. Visit the penguins at Boulders Bay, see the aquarium at the V&A or ride the cable car to the top of Table Mountain. The hotels often have family rooms or suites and most hotels have pools plus there will be no issue with food as the cost is low and there is loads of choice for everyone.”
Costa Rica hosts beautiful scenery, gorgeous beaches and a plethora of wildlife. Despite only covering 0.03 % of the surface of the globe, Costa Rica has 5% of the existing biodiversity in the entire world. The dense forests are brimming with animals such as the jaguar, macaw, armadillo and sloths, just to mention a few! And the scenery is breathtaking.
You can enjoy the country’s majestic volcanoes, waterfalls, Pacific and Caribbean beaches, tropical dry, wet, and rain forests, as well as exhilarating jungle landscapes, and all the animals that inhabit these amazing places, without having to travel long distances.
There are plenty of activities to occupy little ones and older children, from learning about the wildlife and conservation to thrilling zipline rides through the cloudforests. Travel Counsellor Helen took her primary school-age children on a family holiday to Costa Rica and they absolutely loved it: “A great highlight for them was Arenal Volcano near Lake Arenal, the largest volcano in the world, erupting every day since July 1968 until 2009. The local Costa Rican guide had the children in the front of the vehicle so he could explain all about the geology of the Arenal Volcano to them and answer all their millions of questions, what a scoop for their next school project!”
What else did Helen, her husband and their children do in Costa Rica? “The children loved swimming at the beautiful Arenal Kioro Hotes hot springs, and watching the smoke streaming out from the Volcano. They enjoyed playing in the hot springs while spotting the different birds and animals, also horse riding around the different sides of the volcano stopping for a swim in a waterfall.
We white water rafted, zip wired (the youngest watched instead) and filled our time with great activities - even when it rained we had an adventure.”
