Exploring the Spanish Islands

17 June 2021

Island escapes to destinations with smaller populations are gaining interest, and the Spanish islands of the Canaries and Balearics have long been high on the list for those looking for a classic Mediterranean or Atlantic escape. We’ve looked at our favourite spots for a Spanish island break with Marriott International Luxury Brands with its incredible worldwide portfolio around the world.

St Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort

For glamorous, old-school charm, this classy property in charming clifftop gardens can’t be beat, whether you stay as a couple or a family. Think spacious, superbly cosseting rooms including suites with private butler service, along with one of the largest spas in the Mediterranean, complete with a heated indoor pool, an Egyptian heated saltwater pool, a Finnish sauna, a Turkish bath and an ice cave. Dining is also a big draw at St Regis: as well as a tapas bar, there are Michelin-starred degustation menus on offer at Es Fum and oysters and lobster at Sunday brunch. Free shuttle buses run to nearby golf courses and there’s a kids’ club where younger guests can make new friends. You’re just five minutes from Puerto Portals marina and a speedy 20-minute transfer from the airport.

Castillo Hotel Son Vida, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Mallorca

Now transformed into an adult-only hotel, this Luxury Collection property also oozes character: occupying a castle dating back to the 13th century, it’s filled with exquisite antiques and impressive 16th-century portraits by major Spanish portraitists. Another fantastic place for dining, it has some of the finest Spanish cuisine on the island in venues including Es Vi and Es Castell. Wine lovers, meanwhile, revel in the wine cellar, one of the best in the Balearics, with more than 400 global appellations and vintages, 50 available by the glass. Rooms and suites come with magnificent views of the Bay of Palma and the greens of one of the Island’s finest golf courses, and there’s a spa for superlative pampering.

W Ibiza, Ibiza

Far removed from the touristy hotspots, this hotly anticipated, new-in-2021 property brings W Hotels’ playful and innovative spirit to the ‘White Isle’, blending a contemporary vibe with colourful references to Ibiza’s bohemian roots.  Eclectic modern rooms with boho-chic decor, adult-only and family pools, a games room for all ages, a kids’ club, eight tempting restaurants and bars and even an on-site nightclub (the first in Santa Eulalia) mean there’s no need to venture out, but you’re in a great spot for exploring the island’s other beaches, nightlife and rural villages. There’s also, within walking distance, an array of local art galleries, hip boutiques and great bars and restaurants to discover.

The Ritz-Carlton Abama, Tenerife

This is the kind of resort you need never set foot out of during your holiday, if you don’t want to, thanks to its private golden-sand beach with natural pools, seven swimming pools, tennis academy, renowned clifftop championship golf course with ocean views, and dining everywhere from Michelin-starred restaurants to the laidback, chiringuito-style beach club. But this Moorish-inspired resort also offers activities such as whale- and dolphin-watching, mountain-trekking, helicopter tours and water sports. The volcanic spa stands out for its restorative, even transformative treatments inspired by the natural world, local traditions and Roman bathing rituals, including kids’ and teen treatments, and there’s an incredible kids' club with a program devised by famous explorer and adventurer Jean-Michel Cousteau, with immersive experiences that teach kids about protecting the natural world in a fun way.
