Meet Fred.Olsen’s new ship ‘Borealis’

30 June 2021

This July, Fred.Olsen’s new ship ‘Borealis’ will be setting sail from Liverpool on her maiden voyage around the British Isles. This stylish, spacious and comfortable vessel will feature capacity for fewer than 1,400 guests ensuring an intimate experience for all on board as you sail from convenient UK departure points to discover the British Isles, Europe and the rest of the world.

Borealis

As a firm favourite amongst the Travel Counsellor’s community, we were excited when Fred.Olsen unveiled plans for the new ship and as we near the date of her maiden voyage, we’ve taken a closer look at what she has in store for you.

Whilst smaller than many cruise vessels in terms of capacity, Borealis is still one of the largest ships in the Fred.Olsen fleet, ensuring you never feel overcrowded onboard. From its stylish bars, elegant dining venues and soothing spa facilities, to its 690 cabins, there’s abundant space for you to unwind and enjoy the experience.

The onboard experience

Reflecting the style and home-away-from-home feel that guests adore about Fred.Olsen, Borealis has been created in the same vein as its predecessors yet with its own distinctive personality.

Across its eleven bars and lounges you’ll find space to unwind, as you enjoy the freedom of choice that such a breadth of options provides. At the impressive Evening Show lounge there’s a two-tiered seating arrangement to provide you with unspoilt views of the stage whilst enjoying the included after-dinner shows each evening.

Mealtimes are a real event on Borealis, thanks to the skilled culinary team who’ll be serving up perfectly cooked breakfasts and sumptuous five course á la carte dinners every day. The ship’s grand two-tiered venue, featuring the Aurora restaurant on the upper tier and Borealis on the lower, exemplifies this sense of occasion with its classical and elegant décor. Alternatively, there's the Goan-inspired Vasco or the new Asian fusion Colours and Tastes.

During the days, choose between lounging around the Oasis swimming pool, enjoying a soothing spa ritual in one of nine treatment rooms and learning some new skills at one of the fantastic cooking classes in the auditorium. Then, as the lights go down, settle in for a live show of music, cabaret or stand-up comedy.

Set sail this year

Starting in July, Borealis will be transporting guests around the British Isles on its much-anticipated ‘Welcome Back’ cruises, each departing from Liverpool. These staycation sailings will pass by the most breathtaking corners of Britain’s coastline, taking in views of the Lizard Peninsula, Jurassic Coast, Giant’s Causeway and the Scottish Highlands amongst other iconic landscapes, with stops being included in many to give you a chance to explore and soak up the local culture.

From August, the cruises will be going international with a nine-night sailing to the untamed landscape of Iceland on 14th August. There, you will experience the full force of nature as you explore the Golden Circle and stand before the Gullfoss Waterfall and gushing Geysir hot springs.

Beginning in September, Borealis will then begin to sail south, visiting the sunnier climes of Barcelona, Majorca, Lisbon, the Azores and the Algarve region to name but a few, with cultural highlights including a visit to Bordeaux and Valencia.

Planning ahead for 2022 onwards

For those of us looking to plan ahead, Borealis’ calendar spans well into 2022, including cruises to see the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Northern Lights, Christmas celebrations in the Canaries, the remote landscapes of Iceland and Greenland, and transatlantic crossings to Canada, Central America and the Caribbean. And, for that dream once-in-a-lifetime getaway, that the pandemic has left you craving, Borealis will be departing on an ‘Around the world in 80 days’ sailing from Liverpool and Southampton in February of 2023. This epic adventure will take you to see the cherry blossoms of Japan, the tropical islands of Hawaii, the tomb of Tutankhamun and the sun-drenched islands of the Caribbean, amongst a long list of iconic spots.
