Mountain adventures in Ras Al Khaimah

28 March 2019

Nestled between the dramatic Hajar Mountains and the azure blue waters of the Arabian Sea, Ras Al Khaimah is the ideal setting for both relaxation and adventure. Literally translated as ‘top of the tent’ due to its location at the northernmost tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Ras Al Khaimah offers something for everyone, from history buffs and culture lovers through to beach bunnies and adrenaline junkies.

Ras Al Khaimah will captivate you with its unique combination of gorgeous beaches, majestic mountains, stunning desert scenery and opulent resorts. Whether you want to relax, indulge, actively explore or discover the emirate's fascinating heritage and ancient traditions, a visit to Ras Al Khaimah will guarantee a holiday that will leave you feeling refreshed, renewed and uplifted.

Explore Jebel Jais – the UAE’s tallest mountain

Ras Al Khaimah is one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in the world, boasting a rich culture and long-standing history dating back 7,000 years. With an array of archaeological sites, breathtaking natural vistas and Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE, this destination is perfect if you want a more cultured or adventure-based holiday.

Located in the eastern part of Ras Al Khaimah and forming part of the spectacular Ru’us al-Jibal mountain range, the magnificent Jebel Jais stands at 1,934 metres tall and offers a mountain experience like no other.

Featuring an abundance of remote wadis and exhilarating hiking and mountain bike trails, Jebel Jais offers stunning rugged scenery and a welcome respite from the heat of the beach resorts, with temperatures here around 10 degrees cooler than down at sea level.

"I have to say the food in Ras is some of the best I have had anywhere in the world, especially the Prince's favourite restaurant on the top floor of the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Activities include a sunset mountain picnic, Bedouin camp, golf and the new Jebel Jais via ferrata - the longest zip line in the world."

Take on the world’s longest zip line

Ras Al Khaimah’s Jebel Jais is also home to the world’s longest zip line – the Jebel Jais Flight. Thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies won’t want to miss this bucket list attraction, where you can travel at speeds of between 120kph and 150kph (74-93mph) at a jaw-dropping height of 1,680 metres above sea level.

Don your special harness and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime, with the longest flight itself taking approximately two to three minutes. Once completed, you’ll finish off your exhilarating quest on a suspended landing platform, where you’ll be transferred to a second line to complete the journey back down to the ground.

As well as the world’s longest zip line, Jebel Jais is also home to the Middle East’s first commercial Via Ferrata. Professional instructors will guide you along a spectacular route, where you’ll enjoy three thrilling zip lines as you traverse over one kilometre on this exciting mountain adventure.

For less adrenaline-fuelled pursuits, there’s a viewing deck park where you can watch family and friends take on the Jebel Jais Flight whilst you relax with a refreshing drink and a bite to eat. Featuring seven viewing decks complete with 12 binoculars, you’ll be able to marvel at the superb vistas of the glittering Arabian Gulf and Al Hajar Mountain valley below.

"As a destination, it appeals to couples, families, groups and people seeking adventure activities, with its coast, mountains, deserts, springs and mangroves. In terms of activities for all, there's an abundance available to suit all tastes. Examples include motorised water sports, Iceland Water Park, kayaking in the mangroves, desert safaris, camel treks, falcon shows, equestrian activities, golf, hiking trails, mountain biking, snorkelling, plus Jebel Jais – the highest mountain range in the UAE and home to the now infamous world’s longest zip wire – circa two miles long and travelling at around 90mph; some of our party were even brave enough to try this out."
