At the beginning of the month, we singled-out our favourite stopover destinations in the Middle East to turn your long-haul holiday into an exciting twin-centre escape. Now we’re bringing you a selection of incredible Far East locations that are ideal for a short break before flying on to another destination.
Singapore – Singapore airlines
The destination: Explore the amazing city-state of Singapore and experience multicultural sights and sounds including Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer observation wheel and Gardens by the Bay. For the culturally-minded, Singapore is home to an impressive range of museums, while the areas of Chinatown, Little India, and the Arab Quarter pay homage to the city's roots and play host to some of its top cultural sights, events and cuisine.
The airline: Singapore Airlines is consistently rated one of the world’s best airlines thanks to its superb service, excellent culinary options and extensive route network, flying to 62 international destinations in 32 countries across five continents. Fly in one of six brand-new Singapore Airlines Suites where you’ll find a comfortable sleeper suit and slippers along with a handy amenities bag. Flying Singapore Airlines ensures seamless transit through Changi Airport and plenty of options for a Singapore stay.
Our favourite onward destinations: Beijing, China | Seoul, South Korea | Christchurch, New Zealand
“Over the years, I have sent many clients to Singapore, particularly to take advantage of the great offers via the Singapore Airlines stopover programme. Singapore is ideal for a stopover if travelling to or from Australia, and the city is easily seen in a couple of days.”

Bangkok – THAI Airways
The destination: Thailand’s capital is home to a wealth of ancient temples and palaces. Visit the famous reclining Buddha of Wat Pho and be awed by the grandeur and majesty of the Grand Palace, the country’s most important landmark. Adjoining the Grand Palace is Wat Phra Kaew, home to the Emerald Buddha which is thought to have been made in the 15th century. Ignite the senses as you look, smell and taste your way through Bangkok’s many street food markets, or enjoy a fine dining experience on a Chao Phraya evening river cruise.
The airline: On every flight, THAI provides a warm welcome and gracious service with touches of Thailand traditions. Cuisine is inspired by original Thai classics and international dishes from all over the world, designed by THAI Airways’ professional chefs. There is no shortage of entertainment, either, with thousands of hours of movies, television, music and games onboard to keep you occupied, while bespoke amenities soothe and scent the journey. THAI Airlines’ premium seating goes by the name of ‘Royal First Class.’ This top-tier prestige provides just 12 compartment-style seats which offer greater privacy in a separate cabin.
Our favourite onward destinations: Phnom Penh, Cambodia | Luang Prabang, Laos | Perth, Australia
Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia Airlines
The destination: Kuala Lumpur is perfect for foodies looking for an eclectic dining experience that won’t break the bank. A reflection of its diverse population, the city’s street food offers a mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisine. Although the city is known for landmarks such as the Petronas Twin Towers, the world’s largest twin skyscrapers, Kuala Lumpur also boasts natural attractions such as the Batu Caves which are over 400 million years old. The labyrinth of limestone caverns features temples and Hindu shrines, which can be accessed by an Instagram-worthy multicoloured staircase.
The airline: As a national flag carrier, Malaysian Airlines prides itself on Malaysian hospitality which helps to ensure a top-notch experience for its passengers. Enjoy the latest movies, television programmes, games and music with an extensive inflight entertainment offering, indulge in tasty meals and even do a little duty-free shopping from 33,000 feet in the air. Our favourite onward destinations: Osaka, Japan | Colombo, Sri Lanka | Manila, Philippines
“The iconic image of Kuala Lumpur is the Petronas Towers which can be seen from various angles and points across the city. We went to the top of the Kuala Lumpur Tower since, although not as high as the Petronas Towers, it boasts the best views. Afterwards, we strolled through the rainforest eco-park which is a haven in the midst of the city.”

Hong Kong – Cathay Pacific
The destination: Enjoy an eclectic mix of British and Chinese culture in Hong Kong. Known as a top shopping destination, the city’s bustling markets and shopping malls offer everything from souvenirs to designer favourites. Hong Kong also has a pulsating restaurant and nightlife scene, with plenty going on to fill up an evening. However, Hong Kong is not all skyscrapers and shopping malls – the Outlying Islands and New Territories are a sharp contrast to the fast pace of city life, offering travellers serene landscapes of mountains and meadows dotted with hidden temples and traditional villages.
The airline: Four-time winners of World’s Best Airline at the Skytrax World Airline Awards, Cathay Pacific operate to 200 destinations in over 50 countries. Business Class customers enjoy priority check-in and boarding, complimentary lounge access and an exclusive cabin featuring fine dining and award-winning seats, while those flying First Class have their own private, spacious suite with luxurious details including an Aesop amenity kit and in-chair massages.
Our favourite onward destinations: Malé, Maldives | Shanghai, China | Bali, Indonesia
Tokyo – Japan Airlines
The destination: A fascinating mishmash of tradition and modernity, Tokyo is the world's biggest city with so much to see, do, taste and experience. With more Michelin stars than anywhere else in the world, this is the city for fine dining. But if you want something quick and easy then head to a hip sashimi bar or a hole-in-the-wall ramen joint.
The airline: Japan Airlines is the country’s flag carrier and operates from two primary Tokyo hubs at Haneda Airport and Narita International Airport. A five-star airline, as awarded by Skytrax, JAL’s offering is one of the best in the skies, with fabulous inflight cuisine, complimentary Wi-Fi on domestic Japanese routes and cabin crew and airport staff who will serve you with renowned Japanese hospitality.
The airline’s First Class Lounge at Narita International Airport provides a luxurious and tranquil environment with a live sushi chef ready to prepare fresh food for you, while at Haneda Airport’s First Class Lounge, guests can enjoy an exciting teppanyaki dining experience.
Our favourite onward destinations: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam | Hawaii, USA | Sapporo, Japan
“We stayed in downtown Shinjuku, a brilliant place to position yourself for a Tokyo stay as it is a brightly lit restaurant and shopping Mecca. My favourite thing to do was strolling around the beautiful Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, which proudly sports age-old bonsai, cherry blossoms, traditional tea houses, peaceful lakes and pagodas.”
