Lapland Santa breaks are becoming hugely popular among parents looking to give their children a truly magical festive experience and a pre-Christmas (or even post-Christmas) treat while experiencing all kinds of new and exciting activities in the great outdoors – an outdoors the likes of which you’ll likely never have seen before, with knee-deep snow and naturally sparkling pine trees.
Exact activities and offerings vary by holiday, but based on our own Lapland trips, we’ve shared our favourite things to do during your Finland family break.
Hop aboard a reindeer sleigh ride for a scenic trip through the snowy forest.
Drive your children through the trees on an exhilarating husky sledge ride.
Discover the bewitching white-on-white landscape aboard a snowmobile (with kids pulled in a chariot behind your guide)
“On landing in the coldest airport ever (it was -26°C!), there was a crazy elf waiting at the conveyor belt and a lovely Sami with his reindeer outside, so everyone got in the Christmas mood very quickly.”

Have a whole array of snow-based fun, which might include tobogganing (some hotels have free sledges for you to take to the nearest slopes), mini-skidooing, ice-fishing, snow hockey, kick-sledding and tandem-skiing.
Witness the Northern Lights flickering across the sky. You may not be able to count on a viewing of nature’s most spellbinding light display, but you’ll be in the best place at the best time of year for spotting the aurora borealis. You can also increase your chances of a sighting by booking an optional Northern Lights safari, with your guide taking you to the most likely spots to see the phenomenon.
Meet Santa. Riding a snowmobile to a cabin hidden away in the forest for a private meeting with Father Christmas is something no child will ever forget – nor any parent when they see the look on their offspring’s faces…
Visit Santa’s workshop to bake gingerbread with the elves.
Tuck into a traditional Christmas dinner with your family at your cosy hotel or cabin.
Warm up in a sauna, available in many of the accommodation options, or head for the bar for a reviving hot chocolate or cup of hot berry juice.
