There’s something for everyone in Abu Dhabi

15 January 2020

In the heart of Arabia is the United Arab Emirates’ capital city of Abu Dhabi. This futuristic city blends sleek, modern technology and architecture with an enchanting ancient culture. The city’s unbelievable collection of attractions spans the old and the new, offering guests the chance to experience any type of holiday in one magnificent location.

Beaches for family fun

Many of Abu Dhabi’s beautiful hotels and resorts offer their own private beach facilities, but outside of these, there are some gorgeous stretches of powdery sand open to the public that rival any beach in the region.

Corniche Beach sits in the heart of Abu Dhabi, bordered by scenic boardwalks with gardens and benches overlooking the Arabian Gulf. The beach features two dedicated family sections, one with a quiet zone. Right by Corniche Beach is a children’s play area and plenty of free sports facilities including volleyball courts, football pitches and playing fields.

For a quieter beach experience, head up the coast to one of the UAE’s most desirable beach locations, Saadiyat Beach. The authorities here are dedicated to maintaining the natural environment to preserve its stunning scenery by operating a dune protection zone and restricting development on the beach. The resulting environment is serene and teeming with wildlife, including Hawksbill Turtles which use the beach as a nesting ground.

Romance for couples

If you’re heading to Abu Dhabi as a couple, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to spend precious moments together wandering through the beautiful Umm Al Emarat Park, or along the delightful waterfront promenade around the Corniche, before heading for a romantic evening meal for two. Dining options in Abu Dhabi are very diverse, with flavours from around the world served up to the highest standards. Dine on award-winning Cantonese cuisine at Hakkasan in the iconic Emirates Palace, or try authentic Emirati fare at Meylas, a hidden gem in the Al Raha Beach area, near Yas Island.

When you both feel it’s time to unwind, head to one of the city’s spas to indulge in a couple’s massage and a range of treatments designed to relieve any stresses and soothe your tired muscles. The distinctly Asian surroundings of the Anantara Spa create a relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy a desert sand body scrub to exfoliate the skin and leave you feeling refreshed.

“Abu Dhabi is the Middle Eastern charm that is missing from your life!”

Theme parks delivering thrills aplenty

Beneath the iconic red roof of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi sits an array of record-breaking thrill rides including the highest roller coaster loop in the world and the planet’s fastest roller coaster with a top speed of 240 kmph. Besides the thrills, there’s also an engaging selection of family-friendly attractions, live shows, racing memorabilia and a wonderful selection of Italian dining options.

You can also immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Warner Bros film and television at the Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi air-conditioned theme park. Expect to meet your favourite characters across the six immersive worlds, and ride some of the most exhilarating roller coasters around.

In addition, Yas Waterworld will envelop you in a world of fun and adventure. Featuring the region’s first-ever water cinema, Yas Waterworld is more than just its incredible rides and slides, it’s an immersive experience for the whole family.

Adventures in the desert

The vast Abu Dhabi desert, with its huge dunes and massive sand valleys, is a playground for those who love fun and adventure. Off-road driving, dune bashing and sand-boarding are all available in the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) where an endless landscape of sand dunes opens up before you.

To relax in the desert and experience a taste of authentic Emirati culture, the Arabian Nights Village sits amongst rolling sand dunes and allows guests to experience the timeless beauty of the desert while connecting with traditional local culture. Guests can stay overnight in the village in accommodation options which include Bedouin tents, palm houses, desert homes and the fort tower, each of which transports guests to the bygone era of Abu Dhabi’s history.

A culture as old as time

There is an abundance of historic locations, galleries and museums for culture vultures to explore. The stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque sits at the heart of the city, symbolising the unique interactions between Islam and other cultures with its wondrous architecture.

The city’s art galleries include Louvre Abu Dhabi, which is the first universal museum in the Arab world and is an art-lover’s dream, displaying works of historical, cultural and sociological significance from throughout history. Another of the premier galleries in the city is The Art Gallery at NYU Abu Dhabi, where an ever-changing programme of exhibitions engages visitors from around the world.

“One of my favourite places to visit in Abu Dhabi is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is a stunning building and has a very serene feel to it.”
