What we love about amazing Antigua in the summertime

11 June 2019

A quintessential Caribbean island paradise, complete with glistening white sands and alluring aquamarine seas, Antigua is the ideal destination for a seriously stylish summer getaway.

Whether you want to bask in the sunshine on the shoreline and soak up the cool island vibe, take to the waters for some seaside fun or find out more about the rich Antiguan cultural heritage, this chic Caribbean gem really does have it all, whatever type of holiday you’re looking for.

Here are eight things that should definitely be on your Antigua wish list this summer:

Hit the beach

In Antigua, you can visit a different beach every day for a whole year and not set foot on the same stretch of sand twice. With a phenomenal 365 powder white sand beaches to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice, but Dickenson Bay, Pigeon Point Beach and Jolly Beach should definitely be on your list.

We had a great holiday and would not hesitate to go to Antigua again.

Take to the sea

Antigua’s brilliant blue waters are just perfect for a whole host of water activities. If you’re tired of lazing on the beach, take to the sea and try your hand at sailing, diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, tubing and much more besides.

Discover Antigua’s rich colonial past at Nelson’s Dockyard

Head to Nelson’s Dockyard and find out more about the island’s fascinating colonial past and naval heritage. This Antiguan hotspot is the perfect place to visit on a Sunday when it plays host to a weekly barbecue. Feast on sumptuous Caribbean cuisine to the sound of live music against the backdrop of the luxurious yachts and boats.

Head up to Shirley Heights

For those seeking a little adventure, head up to Shirley Heights - a fantastic vantage point with breath-taking panoramic views. It's also the best place in Antigua to watch the sunset, so be sure to take your camera.

"We took an evening excursion to Shirley Heights for evening drinks and a BBQ with calypso music on the steel drums and dancing. It is highly recommended and not to be missed!"

Soak up the vibe at the Antigua Carnival

Each year in late July to early August, the carnival comes to town. Complete with steel bands, pumping parades, colourful costumes and sumptuous street food, this vibrant summer spectacular is not to be missed.

Explore the tropical rainforest

Whilst Antigua is perhaps best known for its beaches, it also boasts a lush tropical interior that’s just waiting to be explored. Whizz through the green canopy on a zip line or join a guided hike and admire the rainforest’s exotic flora and fauna.

"Antigua is very unspoilt, it is what you would class as a typical Caribbean island"

Island hop to Barbuda

The lesser known of the Antigua and Barbuda twin-island nation, the little sister island of Barbuda remains relatively untouched by mass tourism. With endless stretches of secluded white sand beaches, it’s the perfect place for some real rest and relaxation.

Tantalise your taste buds

No trip to Antigua would be complete without sampling the local cuisine, and the seafood here is simply sensational. Delve into lobster, red snapper and saltfish, all washed down with a tot of the local rum, of course.
