Lining Portugal’s sun-kissed south coast, the Algarve has no shortage of remarkable resorts, but one that sets itself apart from the crowd for all the right reasons is Club Med Da Balaia.
This sensational resort promises a memorable all-inclusive holiday with elegant comfort, fine food, and classy and contemporary accommodation. There’s also a near-infinite choice of activities, including lessons for everything from golf and archery to circus trapeze, as well as a spa where you can just lie back and be pampered.
Need further convincing why Club Med Da Balaia should be on the shortlist for your next break? Read on…
With almost 400 superior and deluxe rooms and suites, there’s a type of accommodation to suit all parties of all sizes, with the largest suites offering up to 636 sq.ft of space. All accommodation comes with a balcony or terrace, while suites add amenities such as espresso machine, Bluetooth speakers, a non-alcoholic minibar refilled daily, and bathrobe and slippers.
Club Med De Balaia’s guest rooms are spread over three buildings. Enjoy the sea view from the four-storey Belem building or the eight-floor Coimbra building, while the six-storey Lisboa building lets guests sit out on a balcony and breathe the fresh Atlantic air.
New for 2018, the Vasco Gourmet Lounge lets guests explore a world of rich and varied local cuisine practically any time of day with delicious treats always in store, whether it’s a late breakfast, a lingering lunch, a sweet or savoury afternoon snack or an evening dinner reservation.
Complementing the Vasco’s culinary offering are the elegant Vasco Gourmet Bar and Wine Cellar. The bar serves as the ideal place to meet up with family and friends for early evening drinks, while La Cave - the wine cellar - is your gateway to enjoying the finest wines from Portugal, France and the rest of the world in a sleek modern atmosphere.
If all that wasn’t enough, there’s also the Balaïa main restaurant, offering views of the sea and pool over breakfast, lunch and dinner from a buffet of international cuisine.
After dinner, the bar comes alive with background music, clinking glasses, dancing, theme nights and shows in the theatre under a starry sky. Expect songs, dances, performances and plenty of laughs.
Dive into the water and tone your figure during an aquafitness class in the swimming pool with a series of gentle exercises to shape your body. You will feel light in the water as you make toning, flowing movements to the rhythm of the music. Elsewhere around the resort, there’s table tennis, mini golf, boules and bridge.
Venture outside the resort on an excursion package trip on a half-day exploration of the Algrave’s gorgeous countryside in a 4x4, or book on a half-day stroll through the lively historic town of Lagos.
Golf fans will have no trouble finding courses to perfect their swing in the Algarve, however Club Med Da Balaia is one of the better suited places, not due to the multitude of prestigious courses nearby, but thanks to its Golf School.
The Golf School’s group lessons allow guests to learn at their own pace and get to grips with the secrets of the game’s technical side. Practice your long game with woods and irons, or work on your bunker play, chipping, pitching and putting.
Guests at Club Med Da Balaia benefit from complimentary access to the driving range, putting green, bunker and chipping green, while a range of three- and five-day courses ensure beginners and amateurs can discover and practice new aspects of the game.
Because lessons are available to guests as young as eight years, there’s little restriction in getting the whole family involved. Classes are held at the Da Balaia Golf Club, located just a five minute ride away, with a free shuttle bus departing from the resort hourly.
Staring out over the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by red cliffs, white sand, blue skies and green fairways, Club Med Da Balaia boasts its fair share of idyllic scenery.
After touching down at Faro Airport, it’s only a 35-minute drive to the resort, which sits roughly halfway between two notable resort towns.
To the west, there’s Albufeira - the largest, liveliest and most energetic town on the Algarve coastline. It’s where you can wander the meandering streets of the old town and various gloriously spotless natural beaches, such as the remote Praia de São Rafael, Praia da Galé, and Praia da Falésia with its towering cliffs. Albufeira offers two very different kinds of nightlife too. In the Old Town, it’s charming squares with quaint restaurants and cafes, while a night on the Strip is a livelier affair with an array of bars and nightclubs.
Heading east is Vilamoura, where you can enjoy fine dining whilst overlooking a gorgeous and buzzing marina, where upscale dining and shopping complexes encircle a harbour populated with luxury yachts.
Also not too far from Club Med Da Balaia is Portimao, a big sardine fishing port with a race track used for Formula One trials, and Lagos, a cosmopolitan port with an interesting historic centre.
“The Algarve has lots to offer both families and couples – it is one of my favourite places in Europe. In Albufeira’s Old Town, the streets off the square are like a rabbit warren and each one has shops full of trinkets, souvenirs and specialities. Street performers and live music are not uncommon in the streets of Albufeira Old Town and make it a lovely place to sit and people watch. Sand sculptures are also a big feature on Fisherman’s Beach.”
