Winter sun in the Canary Islands

23 October 2019

The Canaries are islands of perennial sunshine, with rugged volcanic landscapes lined by beautiful golden sands and the crystal-clear water of the Atlantic. With average daytime temperatures of over 20C across winter months and only four days of rain, the pleasant winter climate here is perfect to lounge by the pool yet allows you to be active without feeling stifled.

Here’s our pick of where to head for your winter sun in the Canaries.

Seaside Los Jameos Playa – Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the most easterly island in the Canary archipelago. At little more than 320sq miles, Lanzarote manages to condense a diverse range of landscapes into its small surface area with an interior formed through a history of volcanic eruptions sitting side by side with its golden sand beaches and quaint seaside towns. The spectacular natural environment of Lanzarote has seen the entire island be classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

The traditionally designed Seaside Los Jameos Playa sits just a short stroll from the immaculate sands of Playa de los Pocillos. The hotel’s beautiful pool complex offers you ample space to relax and enjoy the warm winter sunshine, while the broad array of sports and leisure facilities will ensure that you can make your holiday as active or as relaxed as you wish. Four tennis courts, minigolf, beach volleyball and football all allow you to get active while still topping up on your tan. If all the outdoor activities leave you a little tired, fear not, the on-site spa treatments are heavenly and will have you ready to go in no time with massages, Thalasso therapies and body-wraps all being delivered by the expert team.

Bahia Del Duque – Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest and hottest of the Canary Islands, with around six hours of sun per day throughout winter. The island is awash with lively cultural activities and traditions to connect you with Tenerife’ rich heritage and give you a deeper appreciation for the land you are visiting. Outside of the resorts sits a large selection of quaint Spanish villages baring no sign of the influence of tourism and presenting you with a look at the traditional island way of life.

On one of the most prestigious areas of the island, Costa Adeje, you’ll find the world-renowned Bahia del Duque. This luxury hotel has been amazing guests with unforgettable moments for over 25 years with its choice of 5 swimming pools, 8 restaurants, 13 bars and lounges, superb leisure facilities and astronomy observatory. All accommodation at the hotel is surrounded by the pristine gardens, which create a sense of tranquillity and calm from which you can listen to the rolling waves of the Atlantic and feel your stresses melt away.

A world of exquisite dining awaits at Bahia Del Duque, where a unique gastronomic experience promises to captivate your palate. Ranging from fine Gallic cuisine by double Michelin starred chef, Pierre Resimont, to the leisurely experience of dining on the terrace at the Beach Club restaurant with its fresh Mediterranean menu, there are culinary experiences to suit everyone.

Suite Hotel Atlantis – Fuerteventura

Declared a UNESCO world Biosphere reserve, thanks to its dramatic landscapes and sublime beaches, Fuerteventura is an island for the beach lovers amongst us. Its snow-white sands provide sharp contrast to the azure waters that surround it and with over 90 miles of beach around the island you’ll always be able to find a private patch to call your own. Thanks to the long sunny days and strong offshore winds, windsurfing and kite surfing are very popular around Fuerteventura and whether you want to give it a try or simply sit back and admire, it provides a fun experience.

For an incredible worry-free all-inclusive stay on Fuerteventura, head to the Suite Hotel Atlantis. The all-suite hotel’s personalised services for adults make this the perfect spot for a romantic couple’s getaway with dining, relaxation, sports and entertainment all covered by the first-class service, which includes access to the Premium Club Lounge.

Lopesan Vila Del Conde & Thalasso - Gran Canaria

Known as a continent in miniature thanks to the heterogeneous nature of its natural landscape, Gran Canaria is home to rugged mountains, windswept sand dunes, dense pine forests and palm tree lined beaches. However, this variety extends beyond the island’s natural environment and on to the man-made. From the beautiful Spanish architecture of the capital Las Palmas, to the intricate waterways of Puerto de Mogan and the buzzing nightlife scene of Maspalomas, a winter trip to Gran Canaria could see you experience any type of holiday you want.

Designed to resemble a typical Canarian village with its central square and fountains, Lopesan Vila Del Conde & Thalasso has a fantastic array of facilities for families includes a playground, a kids’ club for ages 4–12 years, a mini-disco and a kids’ pool. As the name suggests, the Thalasso (at an extra charge) with sparkling Mediterranean views and the three-hour Thalasso Experience Circuit, includes a seawater hydrotherapy pool and a saline inhalation room. Food ranges from Basque-French to local seafood.
