Asia's hottest destination: six reasons to visit Macao

30 September 2016

Macao’s unique blend of East and West has long made it a favoured stop-over place for those in the know, but this former Portuguese outpost is now emerging as a thrilling destination in its own right.

It’s easier than ever to get there

Om Friday 2nd September 2016, Cathay Pacific launched four new weekly flights from London Gatwick to Hong Kong International Airport. These new flights will complement the airline’s existing five-time daily service from London Heathrow and four flights each week from Manchester to Hong Kong, Macao’s neighbouring special administrative area of China. Your Travel Counsellor can help you find ferry or helicopter transfers from Hong Kong airport across the Zhujiang River Estuary, or Pearl River Delta, to Macao. Hong Kong and Macao might be just forty miles apart in distance, but they are a world apart in culture.

Experience some of the best fireworks on the planet

Start your trip with a bang! Every September, the sky above the Macao Tower lights up with some of the most impressive fireworks you will ever see – as expert pyrotechnic teams from across the world compete to win the annual Macau International Fireworks Display Contest.

This year’s contest – Macao’s 28th – featured a British competitor, Pyro 2000 Ltd, a company that is more at home providing the fireworks for the famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Its entry to Macao’s spectacular light show was “A Tribute to Bond”. However, the Brits are up against some stiff competition, with competitive shows running on the nights of the 24th of September and the 1st of October.

If you’ve ever gazed with childish wonder at a fireworks show, then visiting Macao during this time is definitely something you should do at least once in your life.

Be one of the first to stay in Macao’s newest luxury hotel

Macao offers plenty of five star hotel luxury to choose from, with many giving the best in the world a run for their money. The new kid on the block is The Parisian Macao, in Macao’s Cotai area. For sheer themic ambition alone, The Parisian Macao has to be a must-see. It opened its doors on the 13th of September 2016, so stay this Autumn and you can be among the first to enjoy its 150 authentically recreated Parisian boutiques and cafes, Versailles-inspired lobby, and half-size replica of France’s most iconic symbol, the Eiffel Tower – featuring two observation decks and a restaurant.

The hotel also features a spa, kids’ zone, stunning pool complex with waterslides, meeting rooms and a health club.

Follow in the footsteps of Hollywood

Macao recently featured in the Hollywood thriller, Now You See Me 2 – a frenetic chase through Macao’s exotic streets, luxurious clubs, backstreet restaurants and one unique magic shop. If you’re a fan of the films, why not see the magic for yourself?

Soak up the unique culture

Macao’s unique Portuguese-Chinese heritage gives it a very different, more Southern European atmosphere than its near neighbour. The Historic Centre of Macao – a UNESCO World Heritage listed location – is made up of 20 buildings and monuments of both Portuguese and Chinese origin, including Taoist temples, baroque churches, a theatre, a fortress, a lighthouse, the ruins of St Paul’s and the elegant Senado Square.

This fusion of cultures is evident everywhere in Macao, from its architecture to its cuisine. Macao’s food is legendary and diverse: you can enjoy everything from Michelin-star dining to street noodle stalls and everything in between, including the ubiquitous Portuguese egg tart ‘pastel de nata’.

Brave one of the world’s highest skywalks

End your trip on a high by taking a Skywalk with some of the most stunning views in the world. The Macao Tower is over 330 metres high and it offers amazing views out over the Pearl River delta. If you have the nerves for it, you can take a skywalk around the outside of the tower – or even attempt a mast climb or bungee jump from up there! A truly memorable way to cap off a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
