Changes to Airline Loyalty Programmes

Jennifer Miller on 01 June 2020
Due to restrictions imposed by Covid-19 on travel, airline loyalty programmes have made changes which mean you may continue to receive the benefits and privileges you’ve built up despite not traveling for a while. I’ve summarised some of changes to some key loyalty programmes.

British Airways

Initially BA made the decision to lower Tier Point thresholds by 30% for all Members due for Tier upgrade or renewal in April, May and June 2020.

They have now announced some more positive news for all Executive Club members.

Your Executive Club membership will now be extended by 12 months. All members will benefit, starting with those who have a Tier Point collection end date of July 2020, through to June 2021.

They have also decreased the amount of Tier Points needed by 25%. This is the same for upgrades thresholds too, making that next Tier more achievable.

This results in lower Tier qualification thresholds, as shown below:

Bronze: 225 Tier Points or 18 eligible flights Silver: 450 Tier Points or 37 eligible flights Gold: 1125 Tier Points

In addition, a six month extension is being applied to any Gold Upgrade Vouchers, Companion Vouchers and Travel Together Tickets earned via a BA credit card.

Emirates Skywards Silver, Gold and Platinum members with a tier review date prior to 1 April 2021 will retain their current status for a further 12 months with just 70% of the usual travel requirements. Emirates Skywards Silver, Gold and Platinum members, with a tier status review between March 2020 and September 2020 who are unable to retain their existing tier, will have their existing status extended until 31 December 2020. Those members who have Skywards Miles expiring soon needn’t worry – Emirates have extended their validity until 31 December 2020.
