So let me do the hard work and contact me to provide you with highest level of personal service and those exacting standards that you deserve, so you can spend longer just looking forward to it.

bali and beyond

26 September 2019

In the last few years a number of my customers have travelled with their families to Indonesia, not often thought of as a 'family holiday' destination but believe me when I say, they made memories that will a lifetime! Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, is made up of more than 17,000 islands, yet many of us know just the one; Bali. Look beyond and you can see so much more. Lombok: Just east of Bali is an adventurers highlight. They come here to tackle the dizzying heights of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano which can be scaled via various paths. Longer treks descend into the crater and finish at its lake and hot springs. There are plenty of beaches to cater for the beach lovers away from the crowds of Bali, including Senggigi, which has some upmarket options, and Kuta (not to be confused with Bali’s Kuta, this one is a quiet fishing village offering surfing, diving and other water sports). Just off Lombok are the car-free Gili Islands: Gili Trawangan (known as the party island), quiet Gili Meno and Gili Air, which lies somewhere in-between. Java: Most visitors to Java will spend some time in the chaotic capital of Jakarta, which has both skyscrapers and Dutch colonial architecture. Also popular is cultural Yogyakarta, a centre for Javanese art like batik paintings, shadow puppet shows and music, and nearby Borobudur – the world’s largest Buddhist monument. In the far south-eastern corner of Java is world-class surf at Grajagan Bay, also known as G-Land and home to surf camps from April to October. Sumatra: Jungle, wildlife, wild beaches and more volcanoes await. Top attractions include Gunung Leuser National Park’s population of orangutans, Sumatran tiger, rhinoceros and elephants. Trekkers can also head to Sianok Canyon, with its sheer cliffs and underground caves and bunkers, a legacy from Japanese occupation in World War Two. The Karo Highlands also offer tribal culture, waterfalls. Komodo National Park: Declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, over 30 years ago, Komodo National Park encompasses 29 volcanic islands (including Rinca, Padar and Komodo) and is home to approximately 2,500 Komodo dragons and other reptiles, birds and mammals. The park’s terrain is exceptionally diverse, featuring mountainous hillside, tropical rainforests, grass-woodland savannah and pristine white-sand beaches which lead to sea rich in marine biodiversity and plied by many live aboard dive boats. Kalimantan: The Indonesian portion of Borneo is by far the largest part of this biologically diverse island, the third largest in the world. The main reason to alight here is the vast swatches of jungle, criss-crossed by countless rivers and home to bucket list wildlife like proboscis monkeys and orangutans. Tajung Putting National Park is home to crocodiles and 220 species of bird as well as Camp Leakey, an Orangutan Preservation Centre. I love talking to my clients when they return home listening to them regaling their tales of adventure and they thank me for the little things that make them feel safe and secure on their travels... the transfers that arrive on time and make their journey seemless, the personal touches in their rooms, the correct room configurations and the fact that I have spoken personally to hotel management in advance of their arrival. It is these little things that make what I do as Travel Counsellor different as I strive to give every one of my clients exceptional service.

The Blue Train - pure luxury

26 September 2019

The Blue Train – five-star luxury on wheels Trains often feel very utilitarian, crammed full of commuters or simply a means from getting from one place to another. I’ve been very lucky to travel across the expanse of South Africa on a two-night journey by rail - but this was no ordinary train and if you are looking for the icing on the cake to make your trip to SA extra special then this is for you. First established back in 1923 as the Union Express, it was a vital link between Johannesburg and Cape Town, allowing post to reach the waiting mail ships. The journey back then was all about function until, following a suspended service during WWII, it was resurrected in 1946 with its distinct blue-and-cream livery, a luxury overhaul and a new name – The Blue Train. This was to be a true ‘palace on wheels’ and large on luxury. From the private lounge at Cape Town station, where we toast with pink Champagne as a jazz musician plays the saxophone, a blue-blazered butler leads me to my cabin. He opens the door to reveal a sumptuous suite consisting of two large armchairs that fold into twin beds, a table where a bottle of fizz chills, and a bathroom complete with a walk-in shower. But the real show-stopper is the huge picture window that makes the in-room entertainment system instantly redundant. This is five-star on the move. As we roll out of the city, with the cloud spooling over the top of Table Mountain, the urban sprawl gives way to farmland, vineyards and mountain passes. I’m mesmerised by the ever-changing palette – from greens to golds, grape to granite. It’s about allowing guests to have the space to properly unwind; which isn’t difficult to do very quickly The food is as glorious as the scenery. Dishes of smoked salmon, pan-fried steak and biltong flakes are served on the finest tablecloth and dinner service each paired with lovely local wines and followed by a dessert bonanza of chocolate cigars, hot fudge pudding and deconstructed lemon meringue. As the evening draws in over the Karoo plateau, grey landscapes transform into pink as dusk falls. My nights sleep was sublime in one of the comfiest beds I’ve stayed in. I wake early, raise my blind and lie in bed, simply watching the world go by. Breakfast is not at a set time, so I head to the dining car when I feel hungry and later call my butler for an in-room coffee. The one stop on this journey is at Kimberley, famed for its diamond mines. A waiting tour bus whisks us away from the train to the Big Hole. This massive mining crater is 214 metres deep and filled with water that has a surface area the same size as five football fields. I head to the observation car at the back of the train and, with a drink in hand, watch the setting sun. As the morning surfaces we roll back to the urban landscape passing through Johannesburg to end in the private lounge of Pretoria Station. The Blue Train is a fantastic way to combine Cape Town and a safari experience In the Kruger National Park, if you would like your own special tailormade South African adventure then please get in touch... kate.hughes@travelcounsellors.com
