Hamilton Island

After saying a fond farewell to the amazing Boomerang crew, we took the 45-minute catamaran trip over to Hamilton Island and checked into the Reef View Hotel. Perfectly located in front of a gorgeous white sandy beach, all rooms are large and spacious and sea facing with amazing Whitsunday views. The hotel is perfect for couples, families and groups.

When I stepped out on our balcony I was greeted by not one but two cockatoos from the very many that were flying around the island - and then I realised why our group had been given our name!

There are 74 islands in the Whitsundays and Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island and the only one to have a commercial airport and is right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. There are a range of hotels and apartments and amazing restaurants as well as a smattering of shops and bars to create a little village community feel. On neighbouring Dent Island you will find an 18 hole, par 71 championship golf course designed by five-times British Open winner Peter Thomson.

For dinner we went to coca chu - a South East Asian inspired restaurant that was just amazing!

Whilst you can walk around most of the island or hop on one of the regular free buses, a more fun way to see the island is to hire a golf buggy and go and explore.

Hamilton Island is privately owned by the Oatley family and offers a range of accommodation and here are some options:

Qualia - the ultimate luxury escape with just 60 perfectly appointed pavilions in the secluded north tip of the island.

Beach Club - adult-only boutique hotel with 57 suites right on Catseye Beach.

Palm Bungalows - 49 freestanding Bungalows in a perfect tropical setting and perfect for couples or small families.

Yacht Club Villas - luxury four bed villas with breath-taking views over Dent Passage.

Whilst you can do as much or as little as you like in Hamilton Island, the main Davys is on the Great Barrier Reef and there's a myriad of options for exploring.

My next blog is about how we experienced this amazing natural wonder of the world!

I would be delighted to send you more details of these or other options on Hamilton Island and if you want to know more just drop me a line.
