Malta

I have always had preconceptions about Malta, popular with the older generations, no beaches and not really for me, but after my four days on the island I fell in love and this has changed.

There are some great holiday resorts such as St Julian’s which has some lovely 5* hotels and great restaurants in the Spinola Bay area overlooking the small harbour. I can recommend ‘Girosole’ a great fish restaurant, lovely Sandy beaches in Mellieha or Golden Sands and if you like somewhere to walk Qawra has a promenade which overlooks the bay. At the end of the promenade is the Malta Aquarium, great for a family day out and there’s more great food in their Bistro but be warned the portions are huge. In fact everywhere I went the food portions are huge!

Must see places…

The Mdina – Malta’s original capital is a walled city - a great place to wander, soak up the atmosphere, look at the amazing view and stop for some food in one of the many restaurants or cafes, and home to the best ice cream shop in Malta.

Mdina Glass – Not for children as there is far too much beautiful glass around for small people. Watch how the famous glass is made and then look around the shop trying not to buy everything you see.

Valletta – The new capital and a UNESCO world heritage city. Please take a look at my Valletta blog.

The Three Cities – Vittoriosa, Sengea and Cospicua. Vittoriosa is Malta maritime city with a view over the famous Grand Harbour looking back over Valletta, home to hundreds of boats. Why not try Don Berto for some food and a great view over the harbour.

Rolling Geeks – What are these?! A rolling Geek is an electric car similar to a golf buggy. They offer a self-guided tour via GPS of the three cities, which lasts around 2.5 hours or take the longer tour and head out to the Malta film set. All tours start and finish in Vittoriosa, the best few hours of fun!
