Crete Surprise

One Saturday evening, we received a phone call from a friend who was in Crete for his regular two-week holiday- gloating about the weather and the chilled atmosphere... Being impulsive as we often have been known to be, we decided to see if we could get a late holiday and go out to join them! We had visited Crete several years previously and stayed at Aghios Nickolias so we wanted to find a new resort.

We picked up a great All inclusive deal to a hotel called Athena Palace. Although the standard of the accommodation and food was excellent it was a little isolated for us and up a very steep hill. We hired a jeep for a couple of days and map in hand tracked down the quite resort of Kalives. We found a hotel and checked in for 3 nights and not knowing where to find our friends we just sat in the 'square' as we heard so much about - in wait.

Needless to say before the evening was out they arrived. You can imagine the sheer amazement on their faces when they saw us, couldn't believe their eyes

Kalives is a very small village near to Chania and where our friends were on first name terms with all the locals after spending the last 20 years on holiday here. Very traditional place and a feeling of "true Greece" not commercialised at all. It has a stunning beach. We enjoyed a few great meals in the local tavernas

Definitely a place to get away from it all....
