Salerno..for Herculaeum

Day 2 on board the Celebrity Silhouette our first stop was the port of Salerno We had done Pompeii last year so this year we did Herculaneum. This is the lesser known of the two sites located in the shadow of Mount Versuvius. It isn't as big as Pompeii however Herculaneum is preserved better as it was covered in mud so the wooden and organic based objects such as wooden roof tops , doors, food and skeletons were preserved. It was a coastal retreat where the rich people lived . Most of it hasn't been excavated as it is beneath the town that is now built there and it is also not as crowded. However you still cover a lot of mileage on this trip so comfy shoes or trainers are a must!
