4 Days in Marrakech

17 February 2024

A journey to Marrakech is like stepping into a vibrant tapestry of colours, aromas and cultural wonders. On day one we arrived at the Riad Karmela, a great experience in Marrakech is a stay in a Riad in the heart of the Old Medina. These are traditional Morrocan houses, typically characterised by an inward facing design of a central courtyard with a fountain and lush greenery, providing a peaceful retreat away from the bustling streets of the medina with a touch of Moroccan elegance. After unpacking we ventured out into the Old Medina with its intricate maze of souks, where the air is filled with the scent of exotic spices and Orange Blossom, and the call to prayer echoes through the narrow alleyways. On our second day we had a wonderful local guide called Kamel, he was extremely knowledgeable and he took us to some hidden gems and told us about the history and the Moroccan way of life, this was an invaluable experience which really helped our understanding of the locals. In the afternoon we explored the souks, these really are a treasure trove of Moroccan craftsmanship and culture, alleyways of shops with leather goods, textiles, ceramics, metalworks, wooden crafts, jewellery and spices. A personal highlight for me was a visit to the herbalist La Sagesse, providing us with a glimpse into the traditional healing practices crafted from an array of natural products that have passed down through generations such as teas and essential oils. On our third day we started the day by visiting many places of cultural architecture such as Bahia palace, these amazing buildings feature intricate tileworks known as Zellige in vibrant colours and geometric patterns, elaborate wood carvings to the ceiling, door, and various other architectural details in arches and domes. One of my favourite places we visited was the Madrassa Ben Youssef Madrasa school. In the afternoon we went over to the Gueliz (new Marrakech) and visited Lejardin Majorelle Gardens. These are beautiful to see and they are just a short taxi ride from outside the walls of the Old Medina, costing around 5 euros each way. On our final day we went back to the souks for some final shopping and exploration, our day included relaxing on rooftop terraces whilst enjoying the lively atmosphere of the main square Jemaa el-Fnaa and the various attractions. We visited many restaurants in Marrakech and had some wonderful meals during our stay, my favourite spots were… Grand Café Poste – In the Gueliz Kabana – Rooftop Restaurant & Cocktail Bar just outside of the Medina (reservations) Dar Dar – Rooftop Restaurant & Cocktail Bar in the Old Medina (reservations) Les Jardin – Courtyard Restaurant in the Old Medina (reservations) (no alcohol served) Al Jawda - Pastries and Smoothies L’Mida – Rooftop Restaurant (reservations) (no alcohol served) The friendliness of Marrakech's people stood out during my stay, whether it was the local people in the Souks, the genuine hospitality of Riad Karmela staff or the attentiveness of the various restaurant staff. The personal connections and authentic smiles made our visit more than just exploring historical sites and enjoying delicious cuisine, it really was a wonderful experience overall.

Venice Venture - My 5 day trip of Canals and Culture

30 December 2023

Our five-day trip in the one and only Venice truly lived up to the hype. Day 1: Arrival Our journey commenced with a private shuttle from the airport, offering a breath taking introduction to the Grand Canal and the unique architecture that defines Venice. We checked into Hotel Stucky Giudecca, a charming spot seamlessly blending luxury with the city's timeless allure. A leisurely stroll along the Giudecca Canal set the perfect tone for our Venetian adventure. Day 2: Exploring the Quarters Day two began with a hassle-free ride on the hotel's private boat shuttle to St. Mark's Square. We wandered through San Marco, absorbed the energy of Piazza San Marco, and explored the historic neighbourhoods of Dorsoduro and Cannaregio. Each district had its own distinct character, making Venice feel like a collection of mini-worlds. Day 3: Island Escapade We embarked on a captivating 3-island tour: Murano, Burano, and Torcello. Murano's glasswork was mind-blowing, Burano's colourful houses and lace making resembled a dream, and Torcello's tranquility offered a welcome escape from the tourist buzz. Day 4: Cultural Immersion We explored cultural hotspots like Doge's Palace, Gallerie dell'Accademia, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and Museo Correr. Each stop provided a unique glimpse into Venice's rich tapestry, from the opulence of Doge's Palace to the avant-garde art at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Day 5: Iconic Landmarks and Leisure We wrapped up the trip with must-see landmarks—St. Mark's Basilica, Rialto Bridge, and the Grand Canal with a gondola ride offered a different perspective of the city, and also reserved a slot to go the rooftop terrace at a palazzo shopping centre which provided breath taking views. We finished the day browsing luxury fashion stores at Calle XXll Marzo and a Peach Bellini at the renowned Harry's Bar. We visited many bars and restaurants in Venice, but a few of my personal favourites were… • Vecio Marangon in Dorsoduro, serving a traditional Italian meal. Enjoy the rich flavours of Italy in a warm and inviting atmosphere at this charming restaurant. • Terrazzo Aperol: The perfect place to soak up the traditions of Venice and savour the ritual of Cicchetti & Aperol Spritz. • Brunch Cafe, Calle de la Madoneta: A lovely café with a delightful atmosphere and incredible cuisine! Perfect for brunch, offering a good choice of sweet and savoury options. • Farini, Rialto: One of three in Venice offering fresh focaccias, pizza by the slice & cakes served with hot drinks and fresh juice. • Cafe Al Theatro, Campo San Fantin: This delightful venue serves a good selection of pastries & cakes, focaccias, and coffees. • Gelato Fantasy, San Marco: Delicious Gelato in a city with so many choices, a great selection of flavours, and serves lovely pancakes and smoothies too. All in all, Venice was an absolute delight. The canals, the history, the food, the art—everything blended seamlessly to create an experience that's hard to put into words. If you're craving a unique adventure, Venice should be on your list. </div>
