In Siem Reap alone, these range from visiting the Opportunities of Development thru Art (ODA) association, which supports local children by providing free English language and computer classes, to dining on tantalising Khmer cuisine and being wowed by the skills of the performers at the Phare Circus. In the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, meanwhile, you’ll explore the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, as well as touring the city’s Royal Palace to admire the Silver Pagoda and the Emerald Buddha carved from Baccarat crystal.

In Vietnam, you’ll take a small boat along some of the Mekong's tiny tributaries lined by stilt-house villages and tour the silk-weaving centre Tan Chau with its artisan workshops. Other unforgettable visits include the former home of Huynh Thuy Le, where French novelist Marguerite Duras wrote The Lover, about their affair. You’ll even get to crawl through a section of the Cu Chi Tunnels, which were built as hiding places for Viet Cong guerrillas during combat. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh – formerly Saigon – beckons with its fascinating museums, epic pagodas, and unique restaurants, which you can explore either on a guided walk or at your own pace.
