Hong Kong - the city of bright lights!

When I told people I was off to Hong Kong for four days, most reactions were that I was mad to go all that way for such a short time. Fresh off the flight today I can tell you it's the perfect destination for a long weekend break.

Flying direct on Virgin Atlantic was great. We flew Premium Economy and I have to say it's worth the extra money in my opinion. We had extra leg room, a wider seat and a separate smaller cabin with our own dedicated staff. The meal was delicious too, but I think the standard of food would have been equally good in Economy. Kids TV had a big thumbs up by my 5 year old but to be honest he slept most of the way, comfy in his extra large seat!

We stayed at the Kowloon Harbour Grand, a fabulous hotel situated on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. The hotel has Courtyard view and Harbour view rooms. The views from the rooftop swimming pool, dining area, lobby and Harbour view rooms are spectacular - my son in particular was fascinated by watching the coming and goings of the boats between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island!

A trip on the Star Ferry is a must during your stay. The ferry costs roughly 30p for a one way ticket and the crossing takes around 10 minutes. The crossing however is an adventure in itself and a great way to see the shoreline.

Hong Kong Island has lots to see and we spent a happy day just wondering the roads and seeing where we ended up - eating delicious food on the way to fortify ourselves! You can dine in many different restaurants and for those who miss home, there are many restaurants that you will recognise from the UK - Pizza Express, Pizza Hut and all the usual fast food restaurants. However if you prefer Chinese food, the choice is endless. Hong Kong has so many delicious looking places to eat at - we had to eat several meals a day! Dim Sum and noodle soups are very popular.

We visited the Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island, taking the outside escalators and then the Peak Tram (a Funicular type tram) which takes you to the top. There is an option to buy a ticket which gives entry to the 360 degree viewing platform at the top too. The views are stunning from the top and there are several walks you can take to give you different views of the city..

A great trip for those to escape the bustle of the city for a little while is to one of the many monasteries and temples We visited the Ten Thousand Buddha monastery, located in Sha Tin, a short train journey from Kowloon main station.

For those who wish to stay longer, it is also a great destination. There are many places you can visit if you have the time. Mainline China is a short train ride away but you will need to pre arrange a visa. In Hong Kong itself there is Hong Kong Disneyland, Ocean Park Hong Kong and many many beautiful temples. Also I could have probably happily spent a few days just shopping and eating!
