I was lucky to have had the chance to visit Oporto in June and had a wonderful time. From the moment I was met from the plane by our knowledgeable and friendly guide Rui, who stayed with us throughout the trip, I found the city to be enchanting. Our first night was at the very comfortable Holiday Inn, located in the heart of the city. After checking in, we had our first meal at the DOP restaurant, owned by self taught chef RUI PAULA - the the food was amazing and the whole evening was magical. Certainly one to recommend. The following morning was spent at the CALLEM DISTILLERY, where we enjoyed a guided tour and enjoyed the breathtaking views before heading for a truly traditional restaurant on the banks of the river Douro. After lunch we had a guided tour of the city, Porto cathedral, the famous Lello bookshop and the historical Sao Benito train station – all well worth a visit. Next, we headed off to Guimaraes, a world heritage site, before visiting the castle with its stunning views and a medieval town where we strolled through the streets lined with lovely colourful houses. An aromatic coffee at the pousadda de santa marinha is a must – this 12th century monastery will take you back in time before heading to the family owned hotel QUINTA DE PACHECA, set amongst vine yards and beautiful gardens surrounding a lovely courtyard – a place to fall in love with. The evening was spent at the CASTAS E PRATOS for a gourmet meal whilst we enjoyed fantastic wines before retiring to bed. The next morning was spent trying the local port before another amazing lunch at QUINTA NOVA NOSSA SENHORA with the sun on our backs as we relaxed and ate mouth-watering food, served by the friendly staff. This was another highlight for everyone. Next, the guide took us to the historic railway station, which dates back to the 12th century and from there, onto the hotel VINTAGE where we were greeted with champagne as we took in the outstanding location. The lovely city of Oporto was a charming surprise – full of colour, stunning scenery, history and delicious food, even for the pickiest appetite. A great weekend break for couples and families alike but a guide is greatly recommended to make sure you don’t miss a thing!
