In 2005 I was fortunate to fly to Windhoek, Namibia when we then drove to Ongava on the edge of the Etosha National Park. This is one of the best places to see the ‘big five’ and it lived up to all expectations. We then travelled to Sossusvlei to see the sand dunes, another must see. Followed by, Swakopmund to see dolphins and the Skeleton Coast which is home to millions of seals. Adding in some history we visited Twyfelfontein to see the ancient rock engravings and drove through Damaraland to see the desert elephants. We stayed in the most beautiful individual luxury lodges for 3 nights, making the most of the early morning and evening game drives. It is a busy, happy home, and travel stories are very much part of the fabric of our lives.My love affair with travel began when I was five years old, listening wide‑eyed to the stories of my big brother’s glamorous air hostess girlfriend. I decided there and then that I would work in travel, and I have been fortunate enough to spend the last 47 years doing exactly that.Over those four and a half decades I have held a variety of senior roles across the industry, from high‑street retail and student travel to cruise, tour operating and high‑end tailor‑made. I have managed branches and regions, overseen fares and ticketing, led VIP and leisure sales teams, and worked as a product manager for destinations including the Indian Ocean, Caribbean and UAE. I have also spent time living in the USA and working at sea, which has given me a deep, first‑hand understanding of how every part of a journey fits together for my clients.In March 2017 I was headhunted by Travel Counsellors. It felt a little daunting at first, but the flexibility of working from home, running my own business, and still having the support of our Head Office in Manchester quickly won me over. Wherever possible I work with properties and experiences that support local communities, protect wildlife and minimise their impact on the environment, so that the trips we create are not only unforgettable but also positive for the places we visit.Some of my most memorable travel experiences include: gorilla trekking in Rwanda, swimming with dolphins in Oman and turtles in Barbados in their natural habitats, wolf trekking in Spain, volunteering at an AIDS clinic in Uganda, and seeing the Big Five in Kenya and Tanzania. I have crossed 80 degrees north in the Arctic and seen a blue whale, snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef, surfed in Hawaii, practised yoga on the beach in Bali, stayed in a traditional ryokan at Mount Fuji, travelled on the Orient Express from Bangkok to Singapore, and taken the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff. I have also been caving in Oregon, coffee tasting in Colombia, backpacking in Syria (once only 90 km from Baghdad), and even had the surreal experience of being offered a baby for sale in Papua New Guinea.Travel has given me lifelong friends around the world and a few unforgettable celebrity encounters, including meeting the legendary Pelé and my travel hero Judith Chalmers, who once introduced me at a cruise conference as “more travelled than she is”.I live and breathe travel and I am passionate about using my knowledge, insight and experience to make your travel dreams come true, in a way that is thoughtful, enriching and responsible. I have been passionate about travel since my first trip to Belgium, which was a day trip on the ferry from Ramsgate in 1968. How things have changed!Since that first memorable trip, I have been lucky enough to travel extensively to Europe, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Bali, Malaysia, Thailand as well as several visits to the Caribbean including Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Barbados, Cuba and St Lucia.I have participated and completed specialist destination training for Australia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Canada as well as Sandals hotels in the Caribbean.I have also participated and completed training for the Heart of England Tourist Board and also how to source holidays for anyone with special needs.Among my favourite destinations are Austria (where I worked for six months) Egypt and Cuba. Austria is superb both summer and winter, Egypt is great for snorkelling and diving and Cuba has a wonderful culture and history.However, one of the highlights of a recent holiday in Malaysia was visiting the Yayasan Pulau Orang Utan Island a conservation project for Orang Utan established 14 years ago and not as well known as some other conservation programmes.
