Sisters on Tour- Cambodia

13 October 2020

It was with much excitement my sister and I travelled to Cambodia, this was a big tick off my wish list, but also being lucky to share this experience with my son and his girlfriend who were 6 weeks into a three month Asian adventure. Sisters on Tour - we flew with Vietnam Airlines from Heathrow to Phnom Penh in Premium Economy Class. Not as luxurious as Qantas, Virgin or BA Premium Economy Class, but a comfortable flight on the Dreamliner with good service. Phnom Penh is a must for a couple of nights to see the Killings Fields Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields difficult to understand how this could happen, it certainly leaves a harrowing memory of the awful genocide that took place. The next part of our trip was to Siem Reap, we decide to go by road via Battambang and experience I am not sure I would do any (long road journey) We did get a good feel of the country side but the roads are still being modernised, lots of road works and delays, slow traffic. Battambang was a good stop we had the opportunity to visit a local family and cook lunch with them - that's after a visit to the local market to buy the produce which is always interesting to experience. it was lovely chatting to the family and helping them make the meal which we then ate. The next day was my favourite, a day on the Tonale Sap to a floating village. All the images I had were so different to how it was. Its quite incredible to see every day life on floating pontoons, schools, shops, restaurants. These villages move according to how deep the lake is, in March they were a long way in the lake due to the water level being low. A new amazing experience are now floating houses you can stay in for 1 or 2 night, located amongst the reeds so private. They are beautifully decorated and each one on its own floating pontoon. You have a small boat so you can row yourself to the main floating house where food is served, or a motor boat will collect you. The bird life is amazing, while we had lunch we saw pelican, heron, storks, Ibis and Darter water birds. I would have loved to have stayed overnight, the stillness and quiet was so beautiful to experience. Another treat not to be missed are the Bat Caves, 12kms from Battambang. Every evening as dusk falls a colony of bats swarm out for the night, this takes around 45 minutes as millions of bats form a colony in the sky which can be seen for miles. A roof top bar is a great place to experience this! Our final stop was Siem Reap and the amazing Angkor Wat - it would take more than a week to do Angkor Wat justice, this 820 square metres encases some amazing temples, most of which you can walk in or those with steps climb to the top. They are more incredible than any pictures can show. The 9 days we spent in Cambodia was full of amazing sights and lovely friendly and welcoming people. The food is great and we loved pub street in Siem Reap with its lively atmosphere, excellent choice of restaurants and markets close by. It was very good value to eat out locally and we found the standard of cleanliness high - they were sanitising everything in March as Corona started to spread. the hotels also had hand sanitizers in reception and bar / restaurant areas. Standards of accommodation vary there are local 4/5* hotels and European style. We choose to stay in local style hotels which don't have the same high standards or finish of a European 4*. and the price reflects this. We enjoyed being with local people and felt they were good value for money. So here's to the next trip

Stunning Sri Lanka

04 September 2019

We flew from Stansted to Colombo via Dubai. Although the aircraft was on a B777 the seats can be narrow. I would recommend to book seats at the back in the row of 2's, the best seats are the middle row of the 2's. On 15th March we arrived in Colombo. We changed some money on arrival although the rate at 224 Sri Lankan rupees to £1, locally you can get around 232. We were meet outside by our guide Chanaka Amarasinghe, who was fantastic, interesting, informative and very intuitive: the perfect guide. We arrived late afternoon and went straight to the Jetwing Lagoon Negombo for 1 night. A beautiful hotel with gardens down to the lagoon and beautiful views. Our deluxe room was spacious with an enclosed outside bathroom. Lovely buffet dinner and the cost of dinner and 2 drinks was £25pp. The next day was a 9am start with a 4.5hr drive to Sigiriya. We did a private jeep safari in Minneriya Wildlife Park, which meant we could move around according to where the elephants were. We did see a monitor lizard and a few day-old calves. The scenery was stunning. Late afternoon we checked into the stunning Aliya Resort Sigiriya Hotel. On arrival there is a huge staircase to climb, with a panoramic view of Sigiriya Rock at the top. The deluxe rooms are large, well decorated with an elephant theme. Lovely balconies overlooking the immaculate gardens. Exceptional food, amazing infinity pool, lovely and warm. The view to the Sigiriya Rock was stunning. This was my favourite hotel; I could spend 3 to 4 nights relaxing here. Early start the next day to climb the 2000 steps up the Sigiriya Rock to the fortress on the top. Best to do this before it gets to hot and busy. Whilst we were ready to climb the steps Chanaka told us the story and took us around the gardens - it was important before you climb to understand why it was built, why there were so many lookout posts and narrow entrances carved in the rock. It certainly added to the awe when we got to the top. The climb is long with uneven steps and single file all the way up. In my case with a walking stick and climbing using one leg to step up it was very tiring but worth it. There is a rest point just before the final climb. It was amazing to reach this fortress, understanding how the people lived there having to transport food from the gardens below. The view was amazing and serene. The steps down seemed easier and a lot quicker, it was around 2.5 hours including time on the top. I recommend you take 2 bottles of water per person. Chanaka then took us to one of the many roadside stalls with fresh coconuts and we drank coconut water straight from the shell. We asked to go to a local restaurant for lunch, he took us to a local restaurant that had been built in a back garden. Dewata Villas - Oriental Village Restaurant which was lovely a local perfect lunch. The next day was a drive to Kandy of around 3 hours. Before that we had a visit to the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple. A short climb and-it was stunning, though the caves were really hot inside. The drive on to Kandy, although not far, has mountainous roads which are slow and very windy. En route we stopped at a fruit and vegetable wholesalers, where farmers bring their produce in large sacks and hotels and restaurants come to buy. It was organised chaos, there were hundreds and hundreds of sellers with produce I have not seen before, everything was much larger than in the UK. It was interesting, the people did not mind us being there and gave us samples, a fantastic experience. Another stop en route was the Ranweli Spice Garden where you get a free guide (just tip and buy!) who explains the health benefits of the different spices. Kandy is a large very busy town, chaotic traffic jams yet everyone was patient. The lake is very pretty, lots of tourist shops and local crafts such as Batik factory, gems, wood carving, very much geared to the tourist. The hotel, the Mahaweli Reach was old, rooms were very large and comfortable. We stayed on half board here and the food was ok. In the evening we went to see a traditional Kandyan and Low Country dance show. Chanaka got us front row seats, which was excellent, especially when the show finished with walking the coals just a couple of feet from us. The show was lovely and worth seeing. Another early start to see the Temple of the Tooth relic. Every morning you can see the cask where the relic is held. The door closes at 11 am so hundreds of people were queueing to pay their respects. Men must wear long trousers or a sarong. It was amazing to see; I was given some flowers to leave as a gift. We then drove further in the mountains to the stunning tea country and the British Resort of Nuwara Elia, around 3 hours. The drive is beautiful with waterfalls and stunning views. We stopped at a tea plantation for a tour and tea tasting - worth doing and a good place to buy unrefined tea. Nuwara Eliya is very pretty with a very British feel. The Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya is a country house hotel. The temperatures are cooler in the mountains. The food was excellent, rooms lovely. The gardens as you would expect were beautiful. We then drove down the mountains back towards Colombo to pick up the motorway to Hikkaduwa. The journey takes around 6 hours and en route we stopped at a Hindu Temple and (shamefully) Pizza Hut for lunch. We arrived into Hikkaduwa late afternoon, a lively seaside resort and our stay for the next 2 nights was the Hikka Trang by Cinnamon. A pleasant beachfront hotel with both a calm swimming area and also an area with currents going in different directions where the turtles come into shore. Twice we were lucky to paddle and be close to the turtles. There are notices asking people not to touch or get close to the turtles. The sea was lovely and warm and lots of fish. The hotel swimming pool was lovely and warm and lovely to relax in. Plenty of sunbeds, the pool attendants always happy to help find some. The rooms were big and lovely terraces with sea views, very much a young vibe with young staff. All very helpful and friendly and everywhere looked spotlessly clean. We did go out and try a local restaurant, again excellent service and all very reasonable. The hotel also had monitor lizards that wandered around. I loved Sri Lanka, Chanaka was lovely and so intuitive of our needs. Columbus Travel are an excellent company and seemed well thought of whereever we stayed.

Danube River Cruise

26 November 2019

A Danube river cruise is an ideal way of experiencing the different cultures of Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary without having to unpack. The choice of excursions was great, something for all abilities. Some stunning cities, gorges and scenery. The boat was beautiful, the cabins were a good size, with lovely balconies. The food was very lovely with good options at every meal. Service and staff excellent.

South African Adventure

21 June 2017

Going back to South Africa after 10 years was amazing, my first trip was just a four night stay in Cape Town, although a 12 - hour flight there means there is little time difference, so it's easy to settle into the normal sleep routine. Sunny Cape Town is prettier than I had remembered, with some amazing hotels. From the smaller boutique style Queen Victoria, the classic Cape Grace and luxurious Belmond Mount Nelson, to the modern One & Only Cape Town. The Victoria & Alfred waterfront was the ideal location, with an amazing atmosphere, restaurants and shopping, along with being easy to get around. We took the short flight to Port Elizabeth and were collected by Shamwari game reserve to spend two nights at Long Lee Manor. Our ranger Dylan was amazing; we saw two female lions and their cubs, elephants, hippos, rhinos, and a journey of giraffes which was quite amazing, as well as a cheetah with her cubs. The setting is stunning, the vistas breathtaking, and the whole experience amazing. We also visited some of the other Shamwari properties, including River Dene Family Lodge, Bayethe tented Lodge, and Sarili Lodge. There is an accommodation to suit everyone, with interconnecting rooms for families with play areas, tented camps, and stunning riverside locations. The food throughout was exceptional. We flew back to Cape Town and our guide drove us to Boulders Beach to see the penguins on the most amazing white sandy beach, the fishing village of Simons town and Cape Point, although a full day, it was worth joining a tour for the scenery along the coastal roads. Our next stay was in Franschhoek at Mount Rochelle, an amazing property with views to the town and mountains. The rooms are large and a mix of older style to very modern, with outdoor private plunge pools. There is also a large villa which has two private pools for the larger family. Wine tasting was the order of the day, from vineyards to local bars in town, to mixing your own blend. Again, the food was outstanding. While in Franschhoek, we also experienced a meal with a local family, which was a lovely experience. Everyone was so welcoming, explaining about their food and traditions, which again, is an experience well worth doing. Back in Cape Town. we headed to the Mount Nelson, which is located closer to Table Mountain. We had fantastic views from our room in the main building, beautiful pastel colours, large bathrooms, and a balcony with table and chairs. The hotel also has lovely gardens and a swimming pool. The hotel is renowned for their high tea. Our last hotel stay was at the very modern One & Only Cape Town, right on the marina and waterfront. The swimming pool and some rooms are located on an island in the marina. This is a very trendy, modern hotel in an excellent location just five minutes to the shopping centre. South Africa is a perfect destination for foodies, relaxing, wildlife, flora & fauna and amazing experience in one country. I will definitely visit again.

Cultural Tour of Namibia

20 November 2012

I was lucky to be invited on a cultural tour of Namibia, to visit the San, Ovambo, Himba and The Damara people – the latter being one of the oldest cultural groups in Namibia. We also had a short visit to Etosha National Park. Many people still live in the round wooden huts with straw roofs and wear traditional dress, the Himba in particular have avoided western clothing and choose to mix with modern Namibians in their traditional clothing. The people are all very friendly and interesting to listen to, they live by the same traditions as their parents and grandparents and the family unit is very important. To get a real feel of the local life stay in Namibian owned accommodation, some of these are of excellent standard, with clean modern facilities and lovely food. The San and Ovambo people in the North were in particular very friendly. There are some pretty local restaurants, even in isolated areas. Food and drink are both very reasonable, cheaper in the small local restaurants than larger hotels. We visited a Shabeen which is a local pub (really just a shed) and sat with the locals (some speak English, in particular the children). There are smaller airports to save on the long road journeys, but I found the road journeys interesting with the different scenery, the villages enclosed in the wooden fencing, beautiful coloured birds, ostriches, water hogs, and kudu. The roads further away from Windhoek or larger towns become gravel and then in the villages, a mix of sand and gravel. Driving is good but can be slow. The main roads are sign posted, but once in the villages a sat nav is needed – a good reason to have a guide. On a personal note if I had driven I would not have stopped to talk to a group of Himba people sitting by their wooden huts, or watch the Ovambo people fishing, or meet the school children who sung to us. Our guide spoke all the dialects which meant we could ask questions and spend time watching them making baskets, grinding the wheat and talk about their lives. Some suggestions: - Spend time in Etosha National Park, I would recommend two or three nights minimum - Visit Oshigambo – Ongula Village Homestead, which is Namibian owned. It is small with just four homesteads, away from the main tourist areas. Spend a couple of nights relaxing and visiting the local villages. - Opuwo Country Lodge, a large hotel okay for a night en route, is in a good area for walking. - Vingerklip Lodge has stunning scenery and, again, is a good overnight stop en route to Swakopund - Scopine and Walvis Bay are nice for a few days on the coast to see the wildlife and maybe go canoeing - Sossusvlei is a lovely place to visit to see the sand dunes My tips and advice: - Parts of Namibia are amongst the driest places on earth so there are hot days and, dependent on where you are, the evenings can be quite cool, particularly in the North. A warm jumper is good for the evenings. - The best time of year there is winter (our summer). There is little or no rain in the winter; it is a dry heat so excellent for touring and there is no humidity. - Definitely have a guide, preferably one that lives in Namibia. - Do not take gifts – If you want to give a gift buy salt, sugar, wheat, pulses and soap (there is a special soap they can wash themselves, hair and clothes in). You can do this at the many local cheap supermarkets. - For souvenirs try and buy direct from the local people in the villages. - I would suggest spending two or three weeks touring with either a private guide or on a group tour. - It is quite dusty so light clothes are good. It gets hot during the day so knee length or below the knee shorts are good with sturdy walking shoes. Take a jumper for the evenings. The hotels are generally smart casual in the evenings. - Take plenty of tissues and lip salve due to the dry heat! Thank you for reading my journal I hope you have found it useful

We just wanted to say thank you for all the organising of our long awaited trip to Helsinki. Sally and I had a wonderful time. It made things so easy having the taxi transfer, which I have never had before and we loved the welcome note in our room! Everything had been done for us. All we had to do was relax and enjoy it. The Lilla Roberts is such a comfortable hotel and the staff were lovely. Although it was very near the centre, it was in a quiet road. I absolutely loved Helsinki and am planning to return in December for the Christmas markets which should be magical. As soon as I have checked if anyone wants to come with me, I will be back in touch with you to book. Thank you so much once again, Lyn & Sally.

Hopefully, by 2022, things will have improved and we will be looking to book some well deserved trips abroad. Thank you for looking after us so well.

I needed to go to Barcelona last year in July. Usually I would book the flights myself, but the booking systems seemed to be in total chaos because of the Covid crisis. Cheryl managed to book the flights for me and made sure that I knew what extra documentation I would need. I was very impressed and grateful for her service. Thank you, Cheryl!
