Long weekend in Split, Croatia 2017

I flew with my wife from London Gatwick to Split, travelling with Croatia Airlines in economy class. We went for a long weekend and the flying time was only two hours five minutes.

When we arrived at Split airport we took the airport shuttle bus which runs every 30 minutes to the bus station in Split. The cost was very reasonable costing 30kn for a 30-minute journey (depending on traffic). You pay when you board the bus so there is no need to pre-book a ticket. Once we arrived at the bus station, which is situated on the harbour, our hotel was a 10-minute walk although we got lost, going by the directions given to us by Google. After asking a local person for directions, we arrived in no time. The hotel we stayed at was the 4* Cornaro Hotel in a central location. We stayed in room number 325, a double comfort room. I would suggest asking for rooms away from the street as it can get noisy during the night.

The hotel offered a great choice of breakfast including a buffet and hot and cold selection. Also at the hotel there is a wellness centre which includes a gym, steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. A must at the hotel is the 6th floor terrace where you can take a look at the view and see all the city of Split. There is also a bar and jacuzzi on this floor. The hotel does allow pets and it was less than 10 minutes’ walk from the shops, Riva (waterfront), Diocletian Palace and many restaurants.

Organised by Croatia tourism we visited a local restaurant called Tinel, about 15 minutes’ walk from our hotel, which served local cuisine plus international food. Prices were very reasonable, and the staff were very friendly. I would return to this restaurant again and would recommend trying it.

The following day we went on a guided walking tour which again was organised by Croatia tourism. We had a lovely guide called Vedran who showed us the city. He had a great knowledge of the city and all its history. Our tour lasted about an hour. I would recommend a guided walking tour during your stay in Split, as it is a great way to see and explore the city.

During our stay, we walked to the beach from our hotel, taking around 15-20 minutes. We saw the lovely harbour and Riva waterfront. One thing we did miss was taking an excursion to one of the islands, like Hvac or Brac etc. This is easily organised by going to the local tourist office, shops or at the harbour. I recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance.

Split has a very Venetian influence, including the buildings and their cuisine. There is a market that sells fresh produce, plus local products and souvenirs, like honey, lavender and olive oil.

We stayed three nights in Split but felt we should have stayed for longer, as there is so much to do and see. Things that you must in Split are the Diocletian's Palace, The Riva (Waterfront), Cathedral of Saint Domnius and Marjan.

This was my first time to Split and I was really impressed as to what this lovely city has to offer. I would recommend it as a city break but also as a holiday/beach destination. The destination is great for history, food and culture. Split is good for families and couples.

I would certainly go back again in the future and would stay for longer. I would like to thank Croatia tourism and Croatia Airlines for arranging this wonderful weekend break.
