An amazing stay at the Makakatana Bay Lodge

Our first night was at the beautiful Makakatana Bay Lodge, which is set on the banks of Lake St Lucia within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site. This is one of the few natural wonders left on this planet.

We had such a warm and friendly welcome upon our arrival.

The rooms were stunning - I had two chairs and a table looking out to the bush. Within half an hour of arriving, I had a warthog, ngalas, and some monkeys getting up to mischief - sounded like a party was going down right on my roof!

After having a wonderful and delicious dinner, we headed to the banks of Lake St.Lucia (not to be mistaken by the Caribbean island) and hopped into a mokoro (a two-seater canoe boat). This is the only place in South Africa where you can experience this. They had re-introduced this experience a day before we arrived!

Hans kindly took each of us out, using a pole to wade us around the lake I'm not going to lie, I was pretty nervous at first as the lake was full or hippos and crocs! What an amazing experience! I would do this all again in a heartbeat! Also, this is a bird lovers paradise - an amazing place to capture some great shots!

As well as experiencing the game drives and the unique mokoro canoe safari, there is also a private beach you can visit whilst staying at the Makakatana. If you don't fancy staying at the beach for too long, you can head up to mission rocks, where you can explore the bat caves.

Around July-Sept, you can head further up the coast to see the turtles laying and hatching eggs at Cape Vidal.

Keep your eyes peeled whilst along the coast - whales have been spotted in this area too!

The safari here does not have all the big 5 animals, but it sure is a great place to explore. There are elephants, rhinos, hyenas, zebras and giraffes to name a few. There are also wild dogs, which are very rare to spot!

After a fabulous day of adventure, we had a great evening relaxing with food and drinks around their cosy camp fire. A perfect end to such an amazing day.

Tip: Make sure you bring layers and thermals for your games drives as it can be pretty nippy early morning and evening. Also, pack your warm pyjamas if you visit during winter here as it can be cool in your room.

Thank you, Makakatana, for such a wonderful stay!
