CLIA Riverview Conference, Amsterdam - what I learned for your next river cruise
An insight to a RiverView Conference
A couple of weeks go I headed to Amsterdam for the CLIA Riverview Conference. It was a brilliant few days spent doing what I love most, talking travel, exploring ships and getting inspired about where river cruising is heading next. Even better, I got to share it all with my fellow Travel Counsellors. There is something very special about being in a room (and on a ship!) full of people who are just as passionate about holidays as you are. We swapped stories, compared notes on our favourite itineraries and came away with so many ideas for our clients.
CLIA Riverview is a dedicated river cruise conference that brings together cruise lines, industry experts and travel professionals. My days were packed with listening to keynote speakers sharing the latest trends and innovations, training sessions and workshops about destinations, ships and itineraries. We also spent time with river cruise partners, asking all the questions my clients usually ask me. It really reinforced what I am already seeing, that river cruising is growing fast. More people are discovering how relaxed, sociable and easy it is, and how much you can see without constantly packing and unpacking.
One of the absolute highlights was staying overnight on two different river cruise ships. My first night was spent on board AmaSerena. Being able to wander around in my own time, peek into different cabin types and sit in the lounge imagining my clients enjoying a glass of wine as the scenery drifts by was invaluable. I loved seeing how light and airy the public spaces felt, and how much thought has gone into little details that make a big difference on a week-long sailing. The next night I moved to Amadeus Riva, which gave me a totally different perspective again. Experiencing another style and layout back-to-back was so useful. I could really compare what each ship does best and who they would suit: from cabin design and dining spaces to where you might curl up with a book while you sail. Staying on board like this is completely different to just doing a quick ship tour. You notice how it feels in the evening, what breakfast is like, how the crew interact and how guests move around the ship. All of this feeds into the advice I give you when we are choosing a ship together.
Listening to the keynote speakers and chatting to cruise line partners confirmed why river cruising is becoming so popular: Unpack once, then simply step off into a new town, village or city almost every day. No big terminals, no queues, just smooth and simple travel. You are always close to the destination: River ships dock right in the heart of places, so you can wander straight into the old town or join a guided tour without long transfers. The ships are intimate and friendly: You quickly get to know the crew and your fellow guests. It feels more like a boutique hotel that happens to move with you. There is something for every style of traveller: From wine-themed sailings and Christmas markets to culture-packed capitals or slower, more scenic itineraries. The overall message from the conference was clear, that river cruising is expanding in choice, quality and creativity. Which is great news if you are even a little bit curious about trying one.
So, how does all of this help you when you are planning a holiday? I have first-hand experience of ships like AmaSerena and Amadeus Riva, so I can talk you through what it actually feels like on board. I have up-to-date knowledge from keynote speakers and cruise partners about new routes, refurbished ships and what is working brilliantly for guests right now. I can help you decide whether a river cruise is right for you, and if so, which river, which ship and which itinerary will match your style of travel. I can tailor the whole journey around your cruise, flights or rail, hotel stays, transfers and those little touches that make it special. Fancy seeing the rivers for yourself? If you have been thinking about a river cruise, or if this has sparked your curiosity, I would love to chat through the options with you. Whether you are dreaming of vineyards along the Danube, storybook villages on the Rhine, cosy Christmas markets or something a little different, I can use what I learned in Amsterdam to help create a trip that feels perfectly you. Get in touch and let us start planning your next journey along the river.
