Why I Book Sri Lanka So Often

Clare Charles on 24 Feb 2026

Sri Lanka is a destination I book often – and for very good reason.

Few countries offer such an extraordinary mix of wildlife, culture, scenery and beaches in one relatively compact island. In a single, beautifully designed trip, you can move from safari to misty tea plantations to palm-fringed beaches with ease. It is one of the rare destinations that genuinely delivers variety without exhaustion.

For both couples and families, it works exceptionally well. You can set the pace to suit you – combining adventure with downtime, culture with coast, wildlife with wellness. With the right itinerary, carefully chosen hotels and a trusted driver, Sri Lanka becomes seamless, rewarding and deeply memorable.

Small in Size – Vast in Variety

Sri Lanka may look small on a map, but the diversity packed into the island is remarkable.

This is not a destination to base yourself in one place. Within a single journey you can experience:

  • Ancient cities and temples in the Cultural Triangle
  • Tea plantations and cool mountain scenery in the hill country
  • National parks with elephants and leopards
  • Palm-fringed Indian Ocean beaches
  • Colonial towns rich in character
  • One of the most scenic train journeys in the world

You’re never travelling huge distances, yet the scenery shifts constantly.

Getting There ✈️

Whenever possible, I recommend booking direct flights from the UK into Colombo.

Not only are they quicker and simpler, but the timings are far more civilised – particularly on the return. Many indirect routes involve very early morning departures (2am or 4am departures are not uncommon) and long layovers.

Direct flights are popular and do sell out, especially during peak periods, so planning ahead really matters. As with all long-haul travel, booking early helps secure both availability and the best pricing.

Getting Around – This Is Not a Self-Drive Destination

Sri Lanka is not somewhere I recommend hiring a car and driving yourself.

Roads can be busy and unpredictable, and driving standards are very different from the UK. The experience is far more enjoyable – and far safer – with a professional driver.

When you book with me, I arrange a trusted, experienced driver who:

  • Knows the roads intimately
  • Acts as both driver and informal guide
  • Monitors conditions in real time
  • Adjusts routes if necessary
  • Ensures you travel safely and efficiently
  • Makes the entire journey smooth and stress-free

Having the right driver makes a huge difference to your experience.

The Wildlife Is Exceptional 🐘

Sri Lanka offers outstanding wildlife encounters.

You can see:

  • Large herds of elephants in Minneriya and Udawalawe
  • Leopards in Yala National Park
  • A quieter, more remote safari experience in Wilpattu, known for buffalo, elephants and even sloth bears
  • Seasonal whale watching off the south coast (Mirissa) and east coast (Trincomalee), with chances to see blue whales and sperm whales

The Train Journey Through the Hill Country 🚆

The train from Kandy to Ella is widely regarded as one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world.

Expect:

  • Endless tea plantations
  • Misty mountain scenery
  • Waterfalls tumbling through the hills
  • Small local villages along the route

It’s slow, atmospheric and beautifully nostalgic. It’s not about speed – it’s about soaking up the landscape.

The Beaches Are Excellent – But Seasonal 🌴

Sri Lanka’s beaches are genuinely lovely, but timing matters.

December to April – South & West Coast:
Bentota, Galle, Weligama, Mirissa and Tangalle enjoy their best weather.

May to September – East Coast:
Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Passikudah come into their own.

This makes Sri Lanka a true year-round destination – you simply need to choose the right coast for the season.

Accommodation Is Part of the Experience

One of the joys of Sri Lanka is the variety of places you stay. A well-designed itinerary might include:

  • A boutique hotel with views of Sigiriya Rock
  • A peaceful tea plantation bungalow in the cool hill country
  • A stylish safari lodge on the edge of Yala
  • A characterful hotel within the historic walls of Galle Fort
  • A luxury beach resort to end the trip in comfort

The accommodation is a big part of the overall experience, not just a place to sleep.

The Food Is Fantastic

Sri Lankan cuisine is fresh, vibrant and full of flavour.

Expect:

  • Fragrant rice and curry
  • Fresh seafood along the coast
  • Hopper pancakes
  • Kottu roti

If you’re a foodie, I always recommend including a guided street food tour and a hands-on cooking class with a local family. It’s one of the best ways to truly connect with the destination.

Excellent Value for a Long-Haul Destination

Compared to many long-haul destinations, Sri Lanka offers strong value for:

  • Boutique and characterful hotels
  • Private drivers and guides
  • Unique, immersive experiences

It Combines Beautifully with the Maldives 🏝️

Sri Lanka pairs effortlessly with the Maldives – just a 90-minute flight away.

This is an exceptional twin-centre option: culture and wildlife in Sri Lanka followed by complete relaxation in an overwater villa in the Maldives.
