Norway - sailing the coast

I sailed on Hurtigruten to Honningsvåg the Northern most town in Europe. It had to be rebuilt after the Second World War as the German nazis burnt down and destroyed everything, though the church remained standing. The towns people returned, they had to get permission before they could come back and skilled men were only allowed at first apart from any single women that could nurse or sew and they lived in the church in which they built a chimney so they could bake! Very interesting and resilient people. The dog statue is Bamse who was a war hero dog….and there is an identical one in Montrose looking towards Honningsvag…. Popped into Alta saw the cathedral…though not much else there open as it was Sunday, so we headed off on a longer sailing down to Lodingen arriving this morning. Though the weather had taken a turn for the worst I visited the WW2 privately owned museum which was very interesting and bought a little Christmas tree decoration in the shop where they only sell locally made items. The beach was just a bit too cold for me to paddle though. Visited Rorvik and took in a couple of museums one detailing the history of the fishing industry in Norway and current ways. Also a museum on the telecommunications. Was surprised by the seagulls nesting on the wooden buildings I’ve never seen that before. The church was interesting as it looks like it is under renovations but it isn’t, this is look they went for after the original church was bombed in WW2 then a simple rebuild took place which sadly burnt down in 2012 at night it lights up! And of course the views en route were fantastic …

The last leg of my journey was sailing down to Bergen before flying home. Hurtigruten was fun and the most amazing scenery! From mountains covered in snow to them being green and pink. Light nights with the midnight sun to darker nights the more South we travelled. The Norwegian people are so lovely and made us very welcome as did the crew on board….for more information get in touch....
