Short break in Crete
Sometimes you just need a few days in the sun, somewhere easy to reach yet full of character and history. This July I enjoyed a short 5-night break to Crete, my first visit to the island, and it turned out to be exactly the relaxed escape I was hoping for.
Getting there: smooth and straightforward I flew from Birmingham to Heraklion, which made it a very manageable journey for a short stay. On arrival, the transfer to my hotel was wonderfully quick: around 30 minutes from the airport to Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites.
For clients looking for a mini-break rather than a long holiday, this kind of short transfer really makes a difference. You land, you blink, and you are already checking in with the sea in front of you.
A perfectly placed hotel for short stays Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites is ideally located for those who want beach time combined with easy access to Heraklion. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel, with buses into the city for just 2€ per person. Within about 30 minutes, you can be wandering through Heraklion, exploring shops, cafés and historical sights.
This makes it a great choice if you like to mix relaxation with a bit of culture, without needing to hire a car.
Visiting the Palace of Knossos One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Palace of Knossos, the most famous archaeological site in Crete and a fascinating glimpse into Minoan civilisation.
Entrance was 15€ per person, and I would say it is well worth it if you enjoy history, ancient sites or simply want to understand a little more about Crete beyond the beach.
I opted for the hop-on hop-off bus, which runs out to Knossos as well as around Heraklion. It was a very easy way to get around, and it also gave me the chance to see more of the city and learn about its past through the on-board commentary. For a short break, this is a great way to cover a lot without feeling rushed.
Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites: relaxed and adult-focused The hotel itself has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. While children are welcome, it is much more suited to adults or couples looking for a quieter stay.
It is a smallish, family-run hotel with a real sense of history and continuity. The original owner, who is almost 100 years old, still lives on site, and her family now run the hotel. That personal touch and pride in the property really comes through.
There are no kids’ clubs or organised daytime entertainment, so it is not aimed at families looking for lots of activities for younger children. Instead, the focus is on calm, comfort and simple pleasures.
In the evenings, there was occasional live music, such as a piano player and singer on a couple of nights, which added a lovely ambience without ever feeling intrusive or loud. Most nights were about sitting with a glass of wine, listening to the waves and watching the sun sink into the sea: exactly the kind of slow, peaceful pace that many of my clients really value.
Dining at the hotel The hotel offers a good choice of dining options for its size:
A main buffet restaurant, ideal for relaxed, no-fuss meals. Two à la carte restaurants, perfect if you want something a little more special one or two evenings during your stay. For a 5-night break, this gives enough variety that you do not feel you are repeating the same thing every day, while still keeping everything convenient and on site.
Overall impression: a perfect taster of Crete Would I go back to Crete? Absolutely.
This trip felt like a perfect introduction: easy travel, short transfer, a comfy, adult-focused hotel and just enough time to dip into the island’s rich history with a visit to both Heraklion and the Palace of Knossos.
Next time, I would love to explore more of the island and its different regions, but as a taster break it was exactly what I wanted.
If you are considering a short escape to Crete, whether as a couple or an adult group looking for sea views, gentle evenings and a touch of culture, this kind of 5-night stay can work brilliantly. I can tailor the details around what you enjoy most, whether that is more beach time, more sightseeing or a mixture of both.
