Sigiriya Rock Sri Lanka

Highlights of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

Darren Morrison on 01 May 2025

Sri Lanka wasn't always at the top of my travel list. It was a distant name — beautiful in theory, but not somewhere I had ever seriously considered. That all changed when I joined an escorted tour across Sri Lanka — and what a decision that turned out to be. From golden beaches to misty highlands, sacred temples to bustling local markets, Sri Lanka unfolded like a storybook — and having a local guide made the story richer, deeper, and more meaningful.

Sri Lanka with Riviera Travel – Days 1 to 11

I was so lucky to be invited to join Riviera Travel, one of our retail partners, on a tour of Sri Lanka. Having never visited before, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect — but what an incredible country it is proving to be. From ancient heritage sites to lush green landscapes and the friendliest of people, Sri Lanka has already captured my heart.

Day 1 – Arrival in Sri Lanka

We arrived in the early hours of the morning after travelling from Manchester via Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways. After a few hours of much-needed sleep and a delicious breakfast, we had some free time before the rest of our group arrived from Heathrow.

I’m staying at the Arie Lagoon, and my room is huge, complete with a stunning direct beach view. The perfect way to start this adventure and unwind after a long journey.

Day 2 – Ancient Wonders and Cultural Highlights

Our first full day in Sri Lanka began with an introduction to the country’s fascinating history and heritage. From ancient temples to scenic countryside, every corner revealed something new. The warmth of the locals and the vibrant colours of daily life made for an unforgettable start to the tour.

Day 3 – Climb to the Top of Sigiriya

This morning, we set out for Sigiriya Rock, an ancient rock fortress that once served as the palace of a 5th-century king.

Most of the group braved the 600-foot climb to the top — and it was well worth it, with breathtaking views waiting at the summit.

For those of us who opted out of the climb (myself included), we visited the Sigiriya Museum. It offered a fascinating insight into the site’s history through its exhibits and artefacts. Afterwards, we enjoyed a peaceful walk through the beautiful grounds and strolled around the base of the rock.

On our return journey to the hotel, relaxing in the cool comfort of our coach, we were thrilled to spot a working elephant walking down the street — an unforgettable moment that captured the magic and surprise of travelling through Sri Lanka.

Day 4 – Journey to Kandy & A Fragrant Stop in Matale

This morning we said goodbye to our hotel in Habarana and made our way to Kandy, our base for the next two nights.

En route, we visited the Matale Spice Garden, where we were introduced to the aromatic world of Sri Lankan spices. From cinnamon and cardamom to turmeric and vanilla, we learned how these are cultivated and used in both cooking and traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The garden walk was fascinating and appealed to all the senses.

After a neck massage that did me a world of good — and spending £67 on a mix of oils and remedies — I returned to the coach feeling both relaxed and slightly lighter in the wallet.

We arrived in Kandy by late afternoon, ready to explore this vibrant hill city surrounded by the lush greenery of the central highlands.

Day 5 – Natural Beauty & Cultural Wonders

Today began with a serene visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, a lush paradise famed for its expansive collection of exotic flora. We wandered among towering palms, vibrant orchids, and ancient trees, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed a gentle cruise on the river just outside our hotel. The calm waters offered us a glimpse into the local wildlife — graceful kingfishers, shy terrapins, and other fascinating species made appearances, adding a touch of wild magic to the journey.

The day concluded with a memorable experience: a traditional Sri Lankan cultural dance performance. The vivid costumes, rhythmic drumming, and expressive movements brought centuries of history and folklore to life — an enriching end to a beautiful day.

Day 6 – Temple of the Tooth & Lock Glen Tea Plantation

The day began with a serene morning visit to the Temple of the Tooth, one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist sites. Immersed in the scent of incense and rhythmic chants, I felt a deep sense of reverence and peace as I explored the temple grounds.

Afterwards, we embarked on a scenic drive through lush hills and winding roads to the Lock Glen Tea Plantation. The landscape was a breathtaking tapestry of emerald-green tea bushes and misty mountain views.

Later, we arrived at the Golden Ridge Hotel, where I was welcomed with a glorious afternoon tea — an elegant spread of freshly brewed Ceylon tea, delicate finger sandwiches, and decadent pastries. The perfect way to unwind and soak in the highland charm.

Day 7 – Ravana Falls & Elephant Transit Camp

We began the day with a morning departure for a six-hour journey to Tissamaharama.

Our first stop was the stunning Ravana Ella Falls — a perfect place to stretch our legs and take in the beauty of Sri Lanka’s lush landscape.

Then came the highlight of the day: the Elephant Transit Home. This inspiring sanctuary cares for orphaned baby elephants, preparing them for life back in the wild. Watching them during feeding time was truly heart-warming and a moment I’ll never forget.

Day 8 – Game Drive Adventure

An early start today as we set off for Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserves.

The morning game drive offered an exciting opportunity to spot elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and an abundance of birdlife. Returning later for a second safari, we were treated to even more encounters with the park’s incredible wildlife — a truly thrilling experience and a highlight of the trip.

Day 9 – Galle & Turtle Sanctuary

We began our journey today with a short stop in Tangalle to take in the breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.

Next was a visit to a local turtle sanctuary, where we learned about the vital conservation efforts being made to protect Sri Lanka’s sea turtles. Meeting the rescued turtles up close was both educational and uplifting.

From there, we travelled to the historic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cobbled streets, boutique shops, and colonial architecture offered a perfect setting for a leisurely stroll and lunch.

In the afternoon, we continued north to Kalutara, our home for the next two nights — the perfect place to relax by the beach and reflect on the journey so far.

Day 10 – Coastal Serenity

A well-earned day at leisure by the coast. After so many days on the move, it was wonderful to simply unwind, enjoy the beach, and take in the ocean views.

Day 11 – Homeward Bound

Today marked the end of our unforgettable Sri Lankan adventure.

As I prepared to leave, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences of the past days — from the ancient temples and spice gardens to the wildlife encounters and breathtaking landscapes. Most of all, I’ll remember the warmth and kindness of the Sri Lankan people.

It’s bittersweet to say goodbye, but I leave with memories that will last a lifetime — and a hope that I’ll return one day.

Goodbye for now, Sri Lanka.
