Drifting Through Kerala: A Soulful Introduction to India
Keralan backwaters
Kerala... From drifting along the golden backwaters to exploring hidden corners off the beaten track, there’s so much I want to share from this unforgettable trip.
I’ve just returned
from India, and one moment keeps replaying in my mind: drifting along the
backwaters of Kerala as the sun sank low over the coconut palms.
There’s
something almost hypnotic about this place. Life moves at a slower rhythm here.
Coconut palms sway gently, fishermen glide past in their boats, and the water
laps softly against the hull. As the sun turned the water golden, I realised I
was experiencing one of those be-still moments—the kind that makes you forget
about time altogether.
Why Kerala is Called “God’s Own Country”
Kerala
is often referred to as “God’s Own Country,” and for good reason. Its
landscapes are diverse, lush, and soul-soothing:
- Backwaters: Serene canals and rivers wind through
villages, offering tranquil boat rides and glimpses of everyday life.
- Spice Plantations: Fragrant plantations in the hills
invite you to explore the origins of India’s famous spices.
- Misty Tea Hills of Munnar: Rolling tea gardens and cool
mountain air make for some of India’s most stunning scenery.
Everywhere
you go in Kerala, there’s a sense of calm and welcome. The region is both
gentle and vibrant, making it a perfect introduction for travellers who want to
experience India without the overwhelming pace of bigger cities.
A Journey Through the Backwaters
The
backwaters are perhaps Kerala’s most iconic experience. Cruising along these
waterways, you can watch life unfold slowly along the banks. Fishermen paddle
past in narrow canoes, children wave from riverside homes, and the landscape
shifts from emerald palms to shimmering water.
It’s
not just a sightseeing experience, it’s a reminder to slow down and savour the
moment. Watching the sun dip below the horizon and turn the water into gold, I
felt completely present. Moments like this are why I travel: to find those
rare, be-still moments that linger in your memory long after the trip ends.
If
you’re thinking of visiting, here are a few suggestions:
- Best Time to Go: October to March offers pleasant
weather and calmer waters.
- Where to Stay: Houseboats along the backwaters provide
a unique overnight experience. Boutique resorts in Munnar or along the
coast offer luxury with stunning views.
- Must-Do Experiences: Spice plantation tours, tea garden
walks, traditional Ayurvedic treatments, and sampling local
cuisine, including Kerala’s famous seafood curries and Dosas.
- Travel Tip: Kerala is very walkable and relaxed, I can organise a guide or driver can help you uncover hidden gems away from
tourist hotspots.
